Question for Keith Jarrett fans...
How do you feel about his vocal antics on his live recordings. Bt this I mean his grunting, groaning, and whining that he does. Do you think it adds or detracts from his playing?

1. I think it is powerful and free.
I understand it completely. It happens to me sometimes when I play.

2. It used to drive me nuts.
At one point I took all my KJ LPs to the used record store and sold them. Eventually I decided to suck it up and give him a break. He is one of the piano geniuses of our time. So now I listen to his playing and ignore his moaning, etc. I still think they should keep the mike away from him while he's playing. Either that or Downbeat should name him "Jazz Vocalist of the Year" and be done with it.

3. Used to bother me...
Upon further listening, it doesn't. I guess I've been able to tune it out to a degree.

I still make fun of him for doing it though.

5. I understand it, but I think it really detracts from the beauty of the music

and I loved his playing for years. It drives me crazy and makes it difficult for me to listen to his recordings.

Oscar Peterson was much better at vocalizing in a way that complimented his playing.
