18. That is a fallacy, sir.
Let me put this delicately:
I'm a small woman and telephone poles are physically impossible to deal with, not to mention that they are dangerous.

I think the women who would like the generously endowed man, are probably tall, large women.
Just guessing.

4. Some combo of B, C, and F
That would be just fine with me.

Though, instead of scrapbooking, he'd have to enjoy flea markets, the occasional night at the symphony or ballet, and a restaurant with multi-flatware and glasswawre table service. So he'd better own a suit and tie.

In return, I'd go bowling or to a ball game or two. In good weather. I ain't freezing my ass off in the stadium.

25. Sadly, my criteria are shrinking
I'm not sure if it's more to do with the fact that I'm less picky, I feel I can afford to be less picky, or that I've become such an eccentric old broad that I realize it's going to be damned near impossible to even come close to filling my wish list. Right now, I've got it whittled down to taller than I am (6' and up), smart, funny, and kind (at least to me), with a working penis. Bonus if he can quote Big Lebowski, Firesign, and Monty Python and doesn't mind donning a kilt now and then. Even bigger bonus if he's handy around the house. I'm getting really sick of having to be the man all the time (and really need someone who can help me finish installing the springs on my garage door).

Sadly, men seem fixated on skinny models half their age, but what women find attractive is rarely based on appearance. We're supposed to overlook your paunch, receding hairline, Star Wars obsession, and ear hair, but you think you're too good for a little matronly fluff? Pish.

There are definitely a whole lotta things I'm not willing to put up with, but as far as my ideal man, I think it's the "must haves" that I've realized aren't going to happen.

At this point, I'd just like to have two-person sex again. *sigh*

I mean, I guess a guy gets tired of seeing women claim that they like "normal guys" or guys with "a good sense of humor." It's a joke, and if these women aren't lying, they simply aren't in touch with what they're actually after.

On edit: By the way, it's not all just bitterness. I've actually tested my theory. The more I act like a dickhead, the more the ladies are drawn to me. It's pathetic.

Really, though, lighten up. My initial comment wasn't intended to spur a flame-war with some strong, enlightened woman with a chip on her shoulder. My gut reaction to this poll's respondents was "oh they're full of shit" until I noticed that some very valid options had been conveniently left out, at which point I edited the post. I'm sorry you've taken this all so personally, and I can only assume that I hit a nerve in you. I promise that wasn't my intent.

On edit: I must point out...there were 53 respondents, and the 3 least innocent-looking options (athletic+dumb, badboy, and indifferent to the woman's needs) got a whopping 3 votes. I'd say this supports the idea that at least some of you are kidding yourselves! Neener neener!

54. Funny. I've always dated normal guys.
When my ex-husband decided to become an abusive alcoholic, I left his sorry ass, pronto.

Your experience doesn't bear out with me, or with any of the women I know.

And to suggest that those of us responding "aren't in touch with what (we're) actually after" is presumptuous and insulting. I'm pretty tuned in to what I want, and by god--I've got it, too.

Most men I've known who complain that women just don't like nice guys are missing the point. We LOVE nice guys. What we do NOT like are whiny, bitter, boring guys--and I'm not saying YOU are (hell, you might be Mr. Wonderful & Perfect), but most self-described nice guys might want to ask themselves why they might not be so appealing to women.

57. sadly, while far from all women are like you describe
more are than would admit to it, or maybe even aren't consciously aware of it. But the sad truth is, every day I see and personally know, countless cases of genuinely nice guys ( and no, not doormats either) who can't get a woman to think of them as anything but friend material, while macho, arrogant jerks can't fight 'em off fast enough. My guess is that this scenario doesn't apply to politically progressive women quite as much as the general population,as they tend to, by the very fact of being progressives, be more "evolved". Which is good ( hopefully) for me in my search because being a conservative or even a middle of the roader, is a deal breaker for me; only interested in hip, aware women. Not that I haven't thought of trying to become more of a , as you so poetically put it, dickhead, in my lonelier moments, but just don't even know how to be one. But I suspect a lot of men, even progressive DU types,if they're being honest, would have to agree with the 'women are turned on by assholes" theory to at least some extent.

62. I wish with all my heart my observations and experience didn't lead to that conclusion
And if you noticed, I said that this didn't apply to truly "evolved" women, which by definition generally means progressive women have moved beyond being turned on by jerks. But I'd be willing to bet that if you were able to get an honest answer from even many progressive men, they'd admit that troglodyte and I have a point, one which, again, I wish were not true. And again, I only speak from experience and observation, no empirical data etc whatsoever.

67. Absolutely agree with you
Plenty of ignorant shallow men out there (I like to call them republicans) who'll pass by ten nice women for some "flashy babe". But its not just "focusing on the idiots" either, just noticing throughout my life the disparity between how many women claim to just want a "nice sweet guy" yet end up , by their own choice, (and being aware that in many cases this is an un or subconscious choice), with one macho controlling jerk after another. I think the men going after "tits and ass" are at least more upfront and honest about what they're looking for , not that it makes them any less shallow... Not trying to be involved in a flamewar or whatever its called here; I really meant no more than to have an honest discussion of the points troglodyte brought up .

70. Criminy
It seems the aptly-named Trodlodyte needs to sample something besides the demographic he claims to disdain. Once we get old enough to lose all those lame expectations society heaps on us, the majority DO like the nice guys. Kindness gets us more than a fat wallet or some lame badass act. I'd prefer a geek or a working stiff who will volunteer to massage my feet or change my oil over some high-maintenance arsehole any day, a socially awkward guy who can talk string theory or thinks a clean flannel shirt is dressing up over a guy who picks a woman as a fashion accessory. Just because the media is always all about rich and pretty doesn't mean the majority of us actually desire that IRL.

Insecurity abounds. What I'm seeing is that there are a whole lot of nice women sitting around bemoaning the fact they can't meet any nice guys and a whole lot of nice guys sitting on their hands because they don't think they stand a chance with the women they find attractive. Quit feeling sorry for yourselves for being stuck in "just a friend" mode and open your mouths, dudes.

94. Hahahah
I love how you start your post with a personal attack and then round it off with the pep-talk for the guys who aren't confident. I particularly like the "once we get old enough" bit...in my experience, the "old enough" you describe tends to be much older than me and only occurs after a few kids and/or failed marriages to assholes.

Plenty of assumptions have been made about me from that single post, and it's very revealing. I assure you that I'm not shy, self-pitying, under-confident, etc. I don't hate women, as redqueen clearly believes from my two-liner. I may be a touch bitter, but show me someone who isn't and I'll show you someone with very low expectations. It was a pretty innocent comment on a poll that was mostly based on the assumption that women only choose their mates for good reasons.

jesus christ, the last thing i want is a man who is selfish or arrogant. i've dumped men because they are too selfish and arrogance (not self-confidence) is a HUGE turnoff for me. humility is a must, regardless of whether it's a plutonic or romantic relationship. as far as being rich goes, if he's rich it would be a bonus, but i don't care a whit about money. until i lost my job, i was always the one making more money.

And my point is that loads of women are drawn to such men (even if only initially, like yourself)

36. I found him already, and hit the boyfriend lottery.
Tall (6'3"), handsome (like, makes your knees buckle handsome), frighteningly smart, well-read, funny, sexy, built (which was a "meh" category before, but damn...it's pretty nice), liberal, good in bed, plays anything with strings (very talented musician), and treats me better than I've ever been treated before.

No, I'm not sharing, and no, I'm not letting him go anytime soon. :loveya:

39. Jesus, describes me perfectly 18 years ago when Mrs R moved here from California
to live with me.

I've lost some of those characteristics since then because of medical issues, but I'm fortunate that Mrs R has stuck with me even though she misses my lost musicianship very, very much.

That's how you'll know if that love will last: If he loses one or mor of those characteristics you describe, and you still love him, it will be for real.

And neither of us is perfect, but we each think the other is.

He's handy in the kitchen, too. I came home tonight to a Tuscan white bean, sausage and kale soup that was almost too beautiful to eat. Good boy.

No, actually, funny and caring and sexy and a little rough around the edges. Goatees and big forearms, graying hair and funny accents. Passionate (kind code word for a little bit of the crazy) and loyal to a fault. It also helps if they are called Paddy ;)

45. An engineer with musical ability and a personality.
Smart as hell, nice, sweet, kind, warped sense of humor, musical ability, able to fix things(the nice part about engineers). loves to solve household problems and make things functional.

He won my heart when he made a color coded diagram of the breakers in my house and plotted all the light switches and outlets on a floor plan.
:loveya:

Oh and did I mention shorter than six feet?
That's because I'm short and I don't like to feel intimidated by big guys.

I already found him. Five foot eight, gives me speeches about nuclear physics and relativity and the Fitzgerald-Lorenz transformation.

Today's spontaneous lesson was a diagram about asymptotes.

Sometimes goes off on voltage and radio transmitters and why we should develop a rocket using a gamma ray laser for propulsion. And why it was such a tragedy for Congress to stop funding the supercollider they were starting to build in Waxahachie.

I give him speeches about classical music, law and biology.

We wish we had found each other a lot sooner, but we are 9 years apart in age, so it would not have happened when we were young. C'est la vie......

I found the ultimate gift for a mathematician on alibris.com: A first edition in French of Pierre Simon Laplace's Celestial Mechanics. A bargain at a mere $15,000. :D

84. Smart, talented, handsome, funny, compassionate, and LIBERAL
neither rich nor dirt poor. Not arrogant, selfish or abusive (I've know plenty of those). And , although the "bad boy" thing gets old quickly, the "boring guy" syndrome is equally painful. Like the ones who talk about TV, sports, their 401ks and little else that involves an opinion or original thought. If everything he says comes from the TV or talk radio, then it becomes a painful date pretty quickly.

These two are good examples of what so many of us are looking for (and their paychecks are of little to no importance here):

104. Intensity. Integrity. Passion.
A man who doesn't care what others think about him because he knows who he is...feels no need to impress. Not into monetary stuff...just living simply. Knows what's priceless...A man of the earth...a humanitarian....free spirit...rebel.
Someone who would love to read to me....poetry and philosophy.
A skewed sense of humor...quirky....crazed...real.
Music......always living in a song...

The superficial things I like.... jeans, leather, and hair...long hair.
And he shouldn't scream too loudly in bed...when I put my cold feet on him.
oh well....

peace~
