We only went to one game last year, though, because we went to many Southern Maryland Blue Crabs games. I'd love to invite you down for one of those, but it's a big hike for you. Yeah, we love to go see the Baysox.

I think we have a date. :)

137. AAMOF they play about two miles from my house
in Waldorf. They are a brand new team, unaffiliated with the majors, part of the independent Atlantic League. Last year was their first. We hosted a player and will probably do so again this year.

Is Waldorf too far?

Near the intersection of Billingsley Rd. and Route 301 (Crain Highway). From that intersection, head east on Billingsley and take a right at the second light.

Maryland is a very blue Democratic liberal state.

Maryland has a great crabs.

Maryland is north of the Potomac, the good side of the river.

Maryland has a interesting and wide variety of terrain and communities, from mountains to bay to ocean.

Maryland has two counties in the top 10 median incomes in the US.

Maryland is not Delaware.

of a wooded park at some point. I miss being out in the woods. I miss swamps and being surrounded by the noise and the smell.

Not many of woods or swamps are wheelchair accessible though. :(

I'll have to find a nature preserve with a wheelchair accessible tourist path. That's as far into the woods as I can go now. Then I just have to organize a field trip. :)

63. There's a tourist-accessable some-paved-paths wildlife management area near my old house...
it's wooded and has a swamp and the smell and everything. It's only about 2 hours up I-84 then maybe another 15 minutes up CT-4. You might want to call first though, there is a no-motorized-vehicles policy and though they shouldn't give you any issues about your motorized wheelchair, sometimes you get some overzealous DEP ranger who might try to make you use the manually-powered wheelchair if you haven't gotten some sort of approval from his superior.

It's short, only 300 yards, but there are places where you can just stop and soak it all in. It's one of my favorite spots in the state. There's also the Western Maryland Rail Trail which traverses some beautiful countryside for some 10 miles.

You can find some other great accessible Maryland getaways here: http://www.dnr.state.md.us/accessforall/accesstrail.html

A number of states are turning abandoned railroad lines into wheelchair accessible hiker/biker trails. I know there's a huge one in Virginia that's close to 50 miles long.

Let me know if you ever come down this way for a visit. I'd be glad to take you around!:hug::hug:

50. Thirty-seven THOUSAND things I like about Maryland in one word: BALTIMORE.
Dave Kline, John Waters, David Hess, Francis Kalista,
Lenel Meierhoff, Charlotte Chang, Steve Yeager...

Little Noah Hess at that grand & important Gallery Opening,
toddling about so serously and pondering every work...
TASTEING every one before he moved on to the next.

That SOFA that only ever existed in some sort of Art-Deco scene
that didn't make it into "Blade Runner", but Charolette Chang
found on the sidewalk and dragged up the stairs...

Windsor chairs, A Nakishima coffee table, a 1963 Eames chair;
a $300,000 mahogany & ebony veneered kidney-shaped Secretary
that I got paid minimm wage to take a hammer and chisel to...
and that 19-foot-long pink Naugahyde SeatBack from "Club Stingray"
down in Glen Burnie that Frank and I spent 2 hours trying to fit into the van.

The Zataar Bread at Desert Cafe,
the amazingly beautiful waitress at Desert Cafe,
the nervous young dude who made my heart ACHE for him
that time he tried to hit on her...
that much better restaraunt 4 doors up the street that we NEVER went back to
after the asshole who owned it referred to her as "that ugly girl"...

LESLIE OLDENHAM will always have a special place in my heart.
I saw her turn a cartwheel on the sidewalk donwn at Fell's Point once,
for no reason other than she felt like turning a cartwheel,
and because she COULD.

Waiting for the bus at 5th & North Charles at 1:00 AM
with 75 cents in my pocket and and a $1200 .45 pistol in my waistband...
that was something, I tellyawhut.

There was a liquor store there that sold King Kobra Malt Liquor
for 99 cents...they did business 24 hours a day through armored glass,
with a little revolving drawer thingie where they took your cash
and returned your hooch.

My "schtick" was, every time someone came along who was eyeing me with bad intent,
I'd wait until they were well into my personal space and then
suddenly meet their eye and yell:
"Hey, do you like BEER? That place has King Kobra for 99 cents,
but I only got 75. If you got a quarter, I'll split one with you
"

I produced the 75 cents a good dozen times,
and shared some cheap beer with several folks who I know for a fact
had been thinking about mugging me.
(Just for the record, King Kobra is a rich, full-flavored Malt Brew,
with overtones of wood smoke and GOAT URINE)

I consider that one of the greates achievements of my life.

Obi-Wan Kenobi got by ONCE with his "These aren't the droids you're looking for",
but two minutes later he had to whip out his lightsaber and hurt some folks.

I caught my bus at 5th and NCharles 100 times, and never pulled
my pistol once, let alone fired it.
I got by with my words. Ben Kenobi, not so much.

But I digress.

Fells Point.
the Cat's Eye Pub
Barbie Doll Cemetary
The Woodworker's Store in Timonium
THE MAIN BREAKER-PANEL AT THE HICKEY HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!

Buying fresh Chocolate-Chip muffins at that gas station in Towson
every day, and feeding the muffin tops to the little birds
while I waited for my next bus in front of the Social Security Building.

The nice ladies who worked for Social Security and
said "hello" to me every morning as they carefully walked AROUND
the little circle of small birds munching on he muffin tops.

But above and beyond all of that, there's a person who was born and raised there
without whom I would never have experienced any of these things,
or the 29 thousand things I've left unmentioned.

I won't mention her name here.
I won't mention her name anywhere, ever.
If you've ever met her, I don't have to.
You Know What I Mean.

73. LOL...My "schtick" was a huge keyring
with all kinds of keys I didn't need. I had a key sticking out between each finger of my clenched fist, and a long string of them dangling down from my wrist. The neighborhood where I lived was usually fine; but now and then unsavory characters would show up when I was taking my fiddle from school to my apartment at night.

As to things I like about Maryland, where do I start? Well I'd say most anything about Baltimore: brick rowhouses with marble steps, the Orioles, the Ravens, Barry Levinson movies, David Simon TV projects, (I'm not a big fan of John Waters, but he is inevitably Baltimore), "Welcome to Balmer, Hon!".

Outside of Baltimore: Crab feasts (with newspaper on the picnic tables and old bay on the newspapers), the Chesapeake Bay, Calvert Cliffs State Park, Solomons Island, the mountains of Western Maryland, the beaches of the Eastern Shore, the farms of Southern Maryland, downtown Annapolis, the list goes on and on.

But probably my favorite thing about Maryland? My childhood home. So many great memories in that house. Thankfully, my parents sold it to great owners who seem to appreciate it, and even let me see it when I came back to visit.

The homes they either purchased or bought were modest and set on generous-sized lots. Now they put up these giganto-McMansions and squeeze them so tightly together that you might as well buy a town house. Or else you pay twice as much for something that doesn't give you claustrophobia.

Some great DUers come from there.

That picture you posted in the OP looks like the type of place I'd love to go just look at for hours. It almost looks like something I'd see on one of my favorite fantasy genre movies. Gorgeous place!

I used to love the Baltimore Orioles when I watched baseball and Cal Ripken especially.

Joan Jett grew up there and still identifies it as the place she remembers the most growing up. She also once sang the National Anthem at an Orioles game because she's a big Orioles fan. It was gorgeous to hear too.

Check out the acapella version. OMG!

123. To be honest, I wondered why they chose to program the Berlioz...
It's not exactly a cheap concert to produce.

But why did they cut Carmen? I would think that would bring a good audience.

I haven't been called for anything for the remainder of the season. I'm a little concerned that they may attempt to save money by reducing their strings.

PLUS, we just got through a weird contract re-negotiation that was not well-received by some of the "protected members" of the orchestra. They were shooting for a two-tier pay scale, which didn't exactly sit well with the rest of us, many of whom have been affiliated with the orchestra as long as the "protected members".

I don't know....

Maryland is in first place in HS School Students taking (and passing) Advanced Placement Exams in the US

Maryland has the highest Median Household Income in the US. Also, the state's poverty rate of 7.8% is the lowest in the country.

Maryland has one of the largest proportions of racial minorities in the country, trailing only the four minority-majority states.

So we're well educated, well off, spread the wealth and can serve as a big Fuck You to White Supremacists

It's been there forever. I think the first time I saw it, which was over 40 years ago, it was docked in a different place; but I'm not sure.

Edgar Allan Poe,

It is impossible to imagine Goethe or Beethoven being good at billiards or golf.

138. Brookside Gardens in Wheaton
The Catoctin Mountains

Downtown Frederick and its incredible mural

The Brighton Azalea Gardens by the Triadelphia Resrvoir

The Sugarloaf Congregation of Unitarian Universalists in Germantown

Our Democratic majority

The fact that Maryland takes its beauty seriously and plants wildflowers along the highways and a lot of towns plant flowers on road medians.

It doesn't have the horrible traffic of northern Virginia.

My family.

I only wish Maryland had some decent diners and real NJ-style pizza.
