Post something you hate about Mississippi.
No, really don't. We might be here a while. And I will say it is a lovely state contrary to many opinions here.

So nah!!! :P

1. Oxford is beautiful
Edited on Fri Feb-06-09 03:09 PM by EastTennesseeDem
I mean it is absolutely therapeutically beautiful.

But I don't hate it. It's the only thing I can think of.

45. I always kind of said it more like B'LUX-i....
You barely hit the first vowell. What was funny during the Katrina coverage was hearing the media after someone told them they were saying it wrong. It went from bi-lox-i to a sort of Bi-lahx-i, like they knew it didn't sound like box but weren't completely convinced it sounded like luck.

Seriously, though, you'd think most Americans never studied Native American languages.

6. Here. Memorize this
The state song. Personally I think they should change it to "Mississippi Squirel Revival," but that's me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVi46okLcbk

States may sing their songs of praise
With waving flags and hip-hoo-rays,
Let cymbals crash and let bells ring
Cause here's one song I'm proud to sing.

Choruses:

Go, Mississippi, keep rolling along,
Go, Mississippi, you cannot go wrong,
Go, Mississippi, we're singing your song,
M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I

Go, Mississippi, you're on the right track,
Go, Mississippi, and this is a fact,
Go, Mississippi, you'll never look back,
M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I

Go, Mississippi, straight down the line,
Go, Mississippi, ev'rything's fine,
Go, MIssissippi, it's your state and mine,
M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I

Go, Mississippi, continue to roll,
Go, Mississippi, the top is the goal,
Go, Mississippi, you'll have and you'll hold,
M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I

Go, Mississippi, get up and go,
Go, Mississippi, let the world know,
That our Mississippi is leading the show,
M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I

35. My husband is excited that crawfish season is upon us.
It is hard to diet with all of this good food. Crawfish isn't bad though. And since it is served with boiled potatoes and corn, it shouldn't be too bad. Ooh, but you have to add onions and garlic of course. We started adding cauliflower and asparagus to the boil. Quite good. The bad thing is sometimes you get a turtle in the mix. We boiled some last year and my friend said "this is the hardest potato ever". x( It was a poor turtle. I almost cried.

that offers up the greatest Crawfish in the universe. Usually very hot but I like it that way. Garlic is the secret, but don't tell anybody. I don't do it justice but I know where to get it.

And you forgot another "addition." Lots of ice cold beer.

66. I hate the darkness in Mississippi.
Son and I missed an exit on the way to the Helena Blues Festival a few years ago and wound up in Northwest Mississippi. The moment we crossed the river, it was as if the sun itself got three degrees dimmer. It was creepy. There were no clouds that day, but it seemed that Mississippi was somehow getting less sunlight.

My Choctaw blood told me it was because of all the death that had taken place there over the centuries, from DeSoto through the slaughter of Native Americans, African Americans, soldiers in the Civil War and the lynchings of the 50s and 60s. I was on a Killing Ground, but had not known that's where I was going. Once I realized that, it was okay.

I guess that's why The Blues came from Mississippi, though any Arkie will claim that it was really Helena. Something powerful--some Big Medicine--HAD to rise up to balance out all the hurt that went on there for hundreds of years. Billy Gibbons nailed it: "When you go to Mississippi, you can just feel The Blues wiggling up out of the ground." John Fogerty went there as well, to get his head together shortly before he began performing the Creedence songs again.

I LOVE Mississippi. I don't like the hurt that happened there. You can pick up on that hurt anywhere in the South, but you can SURE feel it in Mississippi. Hoodoo walks there.
