Black Uhuru was really great. Wall of Voodoo and Stan still give me chills. And I also think that the singer from CB (blanking on her name at the mo) had an amazing voice. Still in Hollywood is incredibly powerful.

34. Lynyrd Skynyrd is the most under-rated band of all-time
People can't get over the whole Free Bird / Confederate Flag thing.

Despite those blemishes they wrote a lot of great songs and were phenomenal performers.

I wish I could have seen them live at their peak.

2 other under-rated bands

The Ramones: Loved by critics but never respected for their musicianship

Superchunk, not really underrated, just criminally under-appreciated.

132. I'm mostly cynical about the R'n'R Hall of Fame
It's just a stupid concept.

Rock and roll should not be a family-friendly tourist destination.

Rock and roll is about sex, drugs and excess in general.

I've never been to the HOF but I've been to the Experience museum in Seattle. My father-in-law went through the Hendrix wing and asked: "How did he die?"

PS: There were lots of people in Skynyrd, several of which are still alive. The plane crash only killed the lead singer, a guitar player and some back-up vocalists.

137. Never been, myself, tater.
Probably never will. I have mixed feelings on the HOF. I think it's an honor for the bands. At the same time, too much discrimination. An example: Progressive bands have got a raw deal. Genesis, Yes, King Crimson and ELP. None of their ilk in there. And, they had a giant influence on Rock. Sure it's sex and drugs. But it's still about the MUSIC. As far as Skynryd, I think Rossington is the only original member still with us. Maybe, the bass player.

Thanks for the link....The Weight and Tobacco Road were awesome, too.
I think I have all the Spooky Tooth CDs....I got a few on ebay years ago....My son grew up listening nonstop...
He was about 12 years old, and would come into the house screaming "you evil woman' in a high-pitched voice.
He can't sing like that now...but a great guitarist at the age of 26...
He was exposed to all the good stuff : )

83. OFFS
HIPSTER POSEUR ALERT! WARNING! WARNING!

Up until 1987, U2 was the darling of the post-punk/college radio set. Once they achieved the dreaded commercial success, it became fashionable to start trashing them.

If the "Joshua Tree" era hype never occured, U2, would be viewed as a very cool, artistically honest 1980s survivor, a latter-day Velvets.

75. 60's - Steppenwolf, Blue Cheer, Fugs
John Kay had an amazing background, and while Steppenwolf had some weak albums, there is a lot more to them than "Born to be Wild"

Blue Cheer created heavy metal in my opinion. Their loud, minimal blues-rock founded a new genre

The Fugs were the first alternative-rock band ever

Especially their second album, which I still listen to, and marvel at the intelligence, wildness and power of it. Never saw them ,but did see Ed Sanders doing acoustic music about 15 years(?) ago. Got to shake his hand and tell him how much The Fugs 1st two albums had "warped my life".

158. Su Tissue, Vex Billngsgate, Chuck Roast , Frank Ennui
from Wikipedia:

Originating in the Southern California Punk rock scene, the band consisted of:

* Su Tissue (Sue McLane) - vocals
* Frankie Ennui (Richard Whitney)
* Chuck Roast (Charles Rodriguez)
* Vex Billingsgate/Bill Vex (William Ranson) - bass
* John Gleur (John McBurney). Gleur left the group during the production of Baby.

Suburban Lawns released the groundbreaking single Gidget Goes to Hell in 1979, followed by the album Suburban Lawns in 1981 on I.R.S. Records which featured the New Wave radio favorite, and the band's second single, Janitor -- all produced by EJ Emmons. Jonathan Demme directed the video for Gidget Goes To Hell which debuted on Saturday Night Live. In 1983 came a 5-song EP, Baby, produced by Richard Mazda. The band folded shortly afterwards.

is that Stella (the 9 year old) had spent the night at a friend's house, and was dropped off by the mother of the friend the next morning.

The mother stated that she felt as if she had brought the girl to her death, because the murders were believed to have occurred shortly after, if not already in progress.

Just horrific.

J Geils: To hell with that "Centerfold" and "Love Stinks" novelty pop crap. The version of John Lee Hooker's "Serves You Right To Suffer" on "Full House" is the sound of a blues rock band carpet bombing their audience.

Humble Pie's "Performance"...one of the greatest live albums EVER. I was in a band a few years ago and we were practicing. I hit the opening chords to "Stone Cold Fever" and my fellow guitarist said "Stop playing that shit," to which I replied "Go fuck yourself."

FM was full of incredible talent; it's rare that any band is so good that all of its members, individually, are as respected and well-known as they are.

Johnette Napolitano is a bad-ass, and has vocal abilities on par with Ann Wilson of Heart, but hardly anybody really knows their stuff.

Andrew Eldritch is a pompous ass, but he's also a genius when it comes to producing and composing. His songs were like rock operas--big, bombastic, and full-bodied music that fills everything that it touches. I love it.

most folks are like, "Meh--who's that?"

Mention Stevie Nicks, and they'll vaguely recognize the name. Play "Dreams," and they'll say, "Oh, I know this song!" but that's about it.

If other parts of the country are different, it would be nothing but good news to me.

The one classic rock station around here occasionally plays Fleetwood Mac, but only one or two songs--usually "Go Your Own Way" or "Dreams." Those occasions are rare, sadly. That station is mostly fixated on harder classic rock (think Led Zeppelin.)

KISS used to be severely overrated and now it is the opposite. Parrish the thought that underneath the make-up and greed is a band that made some pretty good rock-n-roll. Their version of Black Diamond is far superior to the Replacements faithful cover.

Peter and Ace were just fantastic rock-n-rollers. Criss was even trained by the great Gene Krupa! Not many rockers who got that treatment.

146. A Few More 90s
Edited on Sun Feb-08-09 01:06 PM by Urban Prairie
Most of my exposure to obscure indie and alternative bands in the early-mid 90s came through my subscriptions to music magazines that included compilation CDs like the short lived huH Magazine and CMJ monthly.

Sister Machine Gun

Prong

Drain STH (all-girl band from Sweden, and they had chops and were quite attractive, too bad they lasted all of one CD). I was able to see them perform live when they opened for Filter in '97.

156. Amanda Marshall , The Aquabats, Chantal Kreviazuk
2 Canadians and well, only God knows WTF the Aquabats are...

from WIKI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Aquabats

Throughout their career the Aquabats have maintained a fictitious backstory which purports them to be superheroes from a distant island called Aquabania. The band's costumes and pseudonyms tie into this mythology, which is detailed in the liner notes of their albums. Over the years the story of their origins has evolved, changed, and occasionally been retconned to explain changes in the band's lineup. They have also built up a roster of allies and enemies, many of whom are featured in their album artwork and often appear onstage with them as costumed characters in choreographed fight scenes.

According to the most consistent elements of the band's mythology, the original 8 (or 9) members lived on a distant and idyllic island known as "Aquabania," populated by humanlike bat creatures. The island was attacked by the villain Space Monster "M" and 8 (or 9) of its inhabitants fled to the ocean in a hollowed-out log. They washed ashore in California, where they were taken in by Professor Monty Corndog (portrayed onstage by singer Christian Jacobs' brother, Parker Jacobs), who used chemicals to revive them and give them super powers. They donned costumes including "radioactive rash guards," "power belts," and "anti-negativity helmets" (many of which are sold as part of the band's merchandise catalogue) and decided to channel their powers through music in order to "take over the world" by attracting legions of fans. This would then allow them to combat Space Monster "M" and retake their homeland.

Space Monster "M" placed a bounty on the heads of the Aquabats, attracting numerous villains and monsters to pursue and attack them in attempts to end their musical quest. These costumed villains often appear onstage to combat the band in concert. In addition to Space Monster "M," some of the more notable Aquabats enemies to appear over the years include Powdered Milk Man, The Sandfleas, The Floating Eye of Death, Cyclopsis, and Pumpkin Face. Along with their rogue's gallery, the band has also amassed a list of allies who assist them in various capacities. In addition to the Professor, some of the more notable Aquabats allies have included their former webmaster The Pigbat, the Sea Ghost, Danger Woman, and Digital Unicorn.

The band's superhero mythos has often been used as a device for explaining their numerous lineup changes. For example, members departing the group have sometimes been said to have been wounded in battle with the band's enemies, and when Jimmy the Robot joined, it was explained that the Professor constructed him out of various materials in order to provide the band with a robotic musical virtuoso.

Foster MacKenzie III grew up in a wealthy household in Washington, DC. His mother was a society matron whose father was a North Carolina congressman who had chaired the House Ways and Means Committee. His father was a landscape architect who designed golf courses.
MacKenzie was an intelligent yet incorrigible youth who was invited to leave several private DC-area prep schools such as Sidwell Friends. He finally found his niche at Saint James School in Hagerstown, MD, a boarding school. There, he played varsity football.
He went on to Yale, where he majored in African American studies, graduating in 1967. He was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. His fraternity brothers included future President George W. Bush. MacKenzie was a year older than Bush.
While at Yale, MacKenzie formed a band with classmate and fraternity brother Greenlee, who was quarterback of Yale's football team. The band was named Prince La La and the Midnight Creepers. Band members wore ermine capes, silver lame hot pants and boasted that they were never invited for return engagements.
The year after MacKenzie and Greenlee graduated, they returned to the DKE house during Yale's homecoming. Bush, who since their departure had become president of DKE, threw them out and banned them from the house.
Washington, DC

After graduating from Yale, MacKenzie returned to Washington, DC where he worked at various jobs, including one stint driving a Good Humor truck.
One day he took a lot of LSD and went to the White House and climbed the fence. (He later explained that he "was looking for the center of the universe.") He was apprehended by the Secret Service as he ran up the lawn toward the White House. He was the first intruder since the War of 1812 to get completely over the fence.
Following his arrest, he was sent to St. Elizabeths Hospital. This was the first of many visits that he would make in the coming years.

*The large dose of LSD he had consumed caused a psychotic break that led to schizophrenia, with the result that he would be medicated for the rest of his life.

*not so sure I'm buying that last bit

after that, he became the Root!
