Has anyone ever watched Wife Swap? Why is there a show called Wife Swap on the air? |

10. I've watched more Wife Swap than I care to admit... |
|
It gets very predictable after a while though. Super conservative, strict, soccer mom swaps with lackadaisical, irresponsible, well-intentioned but batshit crazy mom and madness ensues.

14. That show asked a woman from our office to be one of the wives who got swapped. |
|
She was a VERY Christian lady just as sweet as can be, actually) who was a teacher for some fundy book about women's roles in marriage and the home--called something like the Flower of Womanhood or some such title (I've blocked that part of of the story, I guess...) Anyhow, that show contacted her and asked if as a practitioner of that book would she be willing to be swapped out into some other household.
She told them no because it really creeped her out. She told all of us at the office about it and then when they did air the show we all made a point to watch it.
I was staggered because they took some woman that was a California Highway Patrol officer and put her in this fundy East Coast household with a man who was a complete dickweed control freak. He refused to even let her drive a car and insisted she have groceries delivered lest she go out of the house un-escorted.
The wife of the fundy dude got put into this pretty modern household in California, and (as they say in the plot summaries) hilarity ensued.
After the show we were talking to our friend about it and she was really unhappy with it because she said it made fun of that book. She said it was WAY more extreme than anything she'd ever experienced and she was really glad NOT to have been part of it.
I watch it from time to time just to see how dysfunctional these people are. It really IS pretty bad and I honestly think those families have GOT to be pissed at how their lives are portrayed.

17. Wow. I wonder if the fundie wife got "ideas" from her experience. |
|
But seriously, it sounds like the typical "reality TV" fodder where they edit and cherrypick parts to make the participants look as extreme as they can.

I watched Trading Places too which was a Fox version of the same show. That was the one with the crazy fundy woman screaming about "gargyles being darksided" and "I'm a God Warrior for Christ!".
:wtf:
One family that was on tonight needs to be investigated. They refuse to send their kids to school and they are not homeschooling them properly. The dad thinks that public school is "anti-Christian and Communist".
The ten year old could not write properly.
My name for the show is "Trade-a-****"

23. Not all of the people participating are sexist. |
|
Unfortunately, there is always one guy who never does a bit of housework, and never helps out with the kids, who insists that housework is only for women. Then the other wife makes the guy wash dishes or sweep. One redneck guy was forced to do the dishes and load the dishwasher. He rebelled by dropping the dishes on the floor and breaking them before they go in the dishwasher.
This guy sat at the table saying "Boobies" to tell the other wife that it was HER job to do housework. She replied by saying "I have four college degrees".
I think that all the feminism of the 60s and 70s did absolutely nothing to change most peoples' ideas about sex roles. A lot of people are terribly sexist.
Oftentimes, the woman who is a compulsive housekeeper and a slave for her family raves about how happy she is waiting on the husband and the kids. Then after a week at another house where she is forced to do other things, they sometimes break down in tears when they realize how unhappy they are, and how the husband and kids take them for granted.
