Post something you DON'T like about Hawaii.
I don't like the fact that I've never been there.

I also don't like the fact that because of Hawaii, it ruins Florida's chances of being the greatest state in the country.

Other than that, all I can say to you Hawaiians is you lucky little bastards. Aloha!

I wonder if they have 18 wheelers in Hawaii. Seems like almost everything could be done with straight trucks except for maybe construction.

Definitely a bad idea. On a 9 hour plane ride, everyone on the plane will be taking a crap at some point. There is no ventilation to the outside.

33. Not true. Hawaii is bigger than RI, DE, CT, NJ, NH, and VT
The Big Island is bigger than RI and DE alone. It takes about 6 hours to drive all the way around the Big island.

45. Well, that's true. But I lived on Oahu for 3 years.
So, for me to take that long of a drive, I'd have to get to the Big Island.

Also, in RI or DE, I can keep driving once I get to PA, MD, MA, etc.

As for horrible people, I can think of only one truly horrible person living in Florida:

The other 14,999,999 or so people are pretty much par for the course in terms ratio of crappy people per state.

....whereas southern California is mainly dusty brown (with shades of brown olive) and catching on fire every other week. Sorry, try again.

Oh, and did I mention you can swim in our oceans year round without a wetsuit?

Plus, having someone from California lecture people from another state about having weird people is like having Dick Cheney lecture someone else about ethical, responsible and open government. :P

34. I'd rather live in a concrete wasteland than Florida's mucky, moldy, awful air
Anyhow I live near the ocean, so the fires never really come close to me, we just get the smoke for a day or two depending on the winds :P

The area I live in is undoubtedly nicer than anywhere in Florida. Come visit Torrey Pines State Beach, La Jolla cove, the UCSD campus, the surrounding canyons, etc.

Sorry, Florida has the most fucked up people by far, hence the Germany or Florida game created by Adam Corolla. Nearly all messed up news stories come from Germany or Florida, here's an example of one of the quizzes http://www.okcupid.com/tests/take?testid=2572651116003749111

The people here are assholes who cannot drive (which I hear is worse in Florida), but at least they aren't all insane.

The only thing Florida has on CA is that it's not insanely expensive.

40. Southern California is the smog capital of the country. Everybody knows that.
Edited on Sun Feb-08-09 01:55 PM by Tommy_Carcetti
On the other hand, even in Florida's urban areas the air is rarely smoggy.

I'll see your Torrey Pines State Beach and raise you a Bahia Honda State Park and a Sanibel Island. Plus, you can actually swim at our beaches. Having a beach that you can't swim at without a wetsuit is about as useful as having an orange that you can't use for juice. Which, incidentially, is the definition of a California "orange"/wax table piece.

So, you live in the San Diego area, hmmm. I seem to remember something in recent years that happened....something weird.....Nike Tennis shoes.....black robes....male castration....Hale Bopp comet......

So what's this you say about Florida having the corner market on fucked up people now? :P

Nope, sorry. Hawaii I envy. California I don't.

That being said, I would still prefer California over some frozen hellhole up north.

As far as the people go, I doubt they are any more crappy people as you say, but there sure are a lot of old people out trying to drive on the roads. The last time I was there I saw many trying to use cell phones while driving. The only thing more scary than an old bastard trying to drive is an old bastard trying to drive while talking on a cell phone.

The laws tend to favor old people also. A good example is that bullshit no-fault insurance that keeps the car insurance rates for old fuckers relatively low at the expense of everyone else.

26. True, but it's most popular in Hawaii.
And, hey. It's Hawaii. What else am I going to dislike about it? (Well, the expense, I guess.) :)

Wikipedia:

The residents of the state of Hawaii and the territories of Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) consume the most Spam per capita in the United States. ... In Hawaii, Spam is so popular it is sometimes dubbed "The Hawaiian Steak." <13> It is traditionally reheated (cooked), resulting in a different taste than Spam eaten by many Americans on the mainland, who may eat Spam cold.<14> One popular Spam dish in Hawaii is Spam musubi, in which cooked Spam is combined with rice and nori seaweed and classified as onigiri.<15>

Spam was introduced into the aforementioned areas, in addition to other islands in the Pacific such as Okinawa and the Philippine Islands, during the U.S. military occupation in World War II. Since fresh meat was difficult to get to the soldiers on the front, World War II saw the largest use of Spam. GIs started eating Spam for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (Some soldiers referred to Spam as "ham that didn't pass its physical" and "meatloaf without basic training.")<16> Surpluses of Spam from the soldiers' supplies made their way into native diets. Consequently, Spam is a unique part of the history and effects of U.S. influence in the Pacific.<17>

The perception of Spam in Hawaii is very different from that on the mainland. Despite the large number of mainlanders who eat Spam, and the various recipes that have been made from it, Spam, along with most canned food, is often stigmatized on the mainland as "poor people food." In Hawaii, similar canned meat products such as Treet are referred to as "poor people Spam."

29. I knew that about Spam...
When I lived in Minnesota I visited the Spam Museum. It is a trip. I wish I still had my t-shirt.

I wonder if the popularity of Spam has something to do with the lack of land mass for livestock agriculture on the islands. So they ship canned "meat" products in, and the islanders love it.

36. it's weird though
Because everything is still shipped in, I think Parker used to sell exclusively to Japan because the market price was better or something. Eevrything is still expensive as hell, you would think you could get Ahi at a fairly reasonable price, nope. Avacadoes grow literally everywhere, can't get a decent price on them either. I think the mob has a stranglehold on the state. Gas shouldn't be that high price, but it's the highest in the nation just about. Gas has to be shipped to the U.S. as well and Hawaii is closer to Indonesia. So, go figure.

Produce, which much of it is grown here in CA, is more expensive here than in Minnesota, where the produce is not grown and must be shipped.

Gas, much of which can be drilled and refined here, is more expensive here than in Minnesota.

The cost of living out here slays me.

The windward sides of the islands tend to be more humid than the leeward side. All you have to do is go up in the mountains and it's cooler and more pleasant. Where did you fly into?

White rice, hamburger patty, fried egg, topped with brown gravy. Cholesterol cocktail.

Exhibit B: the Spam Musubi:

Favored by President Obama, this beauty consists of pan-fried Spam with rice and seaweed. Add an egg to make a one-handed breakfast that would make a McGriddle look like health food.

Exhibit C: Malasadas:

Originally a good way for Portuguese Catholics to get rid of "sinful" things like eggs, sugar, and butter, these beignet-like treats are fluffy orbs of greasy goodness.

I think of Florida as California without mountains or smart people, and one of the pluses of global warming--the state will be gone once the ocean level rises about two inches. On the other hand, that would cause a traffic jam of old people in their wheelchair scooters fleeing back north.
