All time favorite SNL sketch?
I like this one, "It's a Wonderful Life Lost Ending" Dana Carvey as George Bailey, Phil Hartman and Jon Lovitz as Mr. Potter. They all end up beating the shit out of Mister Potter.

14. Murray, Martin, 1979. "What the Hell is That?"

What The Hell Is That?

Tourist #1.....Steve Martin
Tourist #2.....Bill Murray

< Tourist #1 wanders onto set, looks straight into camera inquisitively with a dumb look on his face >

Tourist #1: What the hell is that?! < squints > What the hell is that? < chuckling at himself > What's that danged thing doing here! How did that get here? What the hell is that?! < squints > What the hell is that?! How'd that dang deal get here?! < turns off-camera > Hey! Come on over here and look at this deal!

< Tourist #2 wanders onto the set to take a bewildered look >

Tourist #2: What the hell is that?

Tourist #1: I don't know what the hell that is!

Tourist #2: What in the hell is that?!

Tourist #1: Hey, you kids! Get away from there!

Tourist #2: I would not mess with that thing..

Tourist #1: Don't put your lips on it!

Tourist #2: < ever curious > What the hell is this?

Tourist #1: Well.. get a photo of me with it, anyway!

< Tourist #1 hands camera to Tourist #2, then walks away from camera view to have his picture taken >

Tourist #2: Be careful with that thing. < snaps Tourist #1's picture, as spark of ingenuity develops on his face > Oh, I know what that is!

Tourist #1: < returns next to Tourist #2 > Well, what the hell is it?!

Tourist #2: < looks closer > What is that thing..?

Tourist #1: I don't even care what it is. < pause > What the hell is that?!

Tourist #2: I don't know what the hell that thing is.

Tourist #1: Oh, I know what it is!

Tourist #2: < seeing it > Oh, yeah.. oh yeah.. < chuckles >

< Tourist #1 & #2 walk away from the stage. A beat, before their heads peer back into frame, more inquisitive than ever. >

Tourist #1: What the hell was that?!

< fade >

53. thanks for digging that up
so i don't have to, because that was my instant choice...

i love the purity of it -- two performers on stage, no props and the success of the skit is entireley dependent on how well Martin and Murray can sell it to the audience...pure brilliance...

18. The very first "Debbie Downer" skit, where everyone was trying not to laugh
They weren't supposed to be laughing, but everyone got the giggles, and each time Debbie spoke one of her downer lines, everyone had to fight the urge to laugh. It was far funnier than they intended and the subsequent Debbie Downer skits were not nearly as funny. Couldn't find it on Youtube though.

with Sting, Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon or Wayne's World with Aerosmith. One other that comes to mind is the perverted italian restaurant where the couple is in an Italian restaurant, and Dana Carvey's head waiter character makes lascivious advances on Alley's character...the climax of the bit is when Carvey hoists another female customer onto one of the dining tables with her legs in the air while he simulates humping her. "Bellisima". I almost passed out laughing. Rob Schnieder walked in wearing a Speedo too.

65. The Infamous "Penis" sketch

Transcript here

The sketch, written by Robert Smigel, was originally nixed by the NBC bosses, but was finally allowed (with more penis-y goodness) a week later.

90. Irwin Mainway - Dan Aykroyd and Candice Bergen
We have with us tonight, Mr. Irwin Mainway, President of Mainway Toys. Uh, Mr. Mainway, your company manufactures the following so-called harmless playthings: Pretty Peggy Ear-Piercing Set, Mr. Skin-Grafter, General Tron's Secret Police Confession Kit, and Doggie Dentist. And what about this innocent rubber doll, which you market under the name Johnny Switchblade? Press his head, and two sharp knives spring from his arms. Mr. Mainway, I'm afraid this is, by no means, a very safe toy.

Irwin Mainway: Okay, Miss, I wanna correct you, alright. The full name of this product, as it appears in stores all over the county, is Johnny Switchblade: Adventure Punk. I mean, nothing goes wrong.. little girls buy 'em, you know, they play games, they make up stories, nobody gets hurt. I mean, so Barbie takes a knife once in a while, or Ken gets cut. You know, there's no harm in that. I mean, as far as I can see, you know?

Consumer Reporter: Alright. Fine. Fine. Well, we'd like to show you another one of Mr. Mainway's products. It retails for $1.98, and it's called Bag O' Glass. Mr. Mainway, this is simply a bag of jagged, dangerous, glass bits.

Irwin Mainway: Yeah, right, it's you know, it's glass, it's broken glass, you know? It sells very well, as a matter of fact, you know? It's just broken glass, you know?

Consumer Reporter: < laughs > I don't understand. I mean, children could seriously cut themselves on any one of these pieces!

Irwin Mainway: Yeah, well, look - you know, the average kid, he picks up, you know, broken glass anywhere, you know? The beach, the street, garbage cans, parking lots, all over the place in any big city. We're just packaging what the kids want! I mean, it's a creative toy, you know? If you hold this up, you know, you see colors, every color of the rainbow! I mean, it teaches him about light refraction, you know? Prisms, and that stuff! You know what I mean?

Consumer Reporter: So, you don't feel that this product is dangerous?

Irwin Mainway: No! Look, we put a label on every bag that says, "Kid! Be careful - broken glass!" I mean, we sell a lot of products in the "Bag O'" line.. like Bag O' Glass, Bag O' Nails, Bag O' Bugs, Bag O' Vipers, Bag O' Sulfuric Acid. They're decent toys, you know what I mean?

111. the speed freak housewife
Speed

Housewife.....Anne Beatts

Announcer: Meet Ellen Sherman, Cleveland housewife and mother.

Housewife: Hi! I’m a nuclear physicist and commissioner of consumer affairs. In my spare time I do needlepoint, read, sculpt, take riding lessons and brush up on my knowledge of current events. Thursday is my day at the day care center and then there’s my work with the deaf but I still have time left over to do all my own baking and practice my backhand even though I’m on call 24 hours a day as a legal aide (fades out)

Announcer: How does Ellen Sherman do it all? She’s smart. She takes Speed! The tiny blue diet pill you don’t have to be overweight to need.

Housewife: And then I collect these paper bags and I have them right here, all folded and everything, in case anyone needs a paper bag I have one (fades out)

Announcer: Yes, Speed.

Housewife: (fades in) ‘cause I fold them neatly you know, I don’t fold them just any old way (fades out)

Announcer: Why not ask your family doctor for a prescription today? And when that runs out, you can ask your neighbor’s doctor. And your mother’s doctor. And your college roommate’s doctor. And your best friend from high school’s doctor. And your babysitter’s doctor . . . (fades out)

What made that sketch truly great was that he muffed one of his intro lines,
and the microphones picked up someone in the front row giggling over it...
Eddie stayed completely "in character" as he said
"Yeah, I messed up. So what? Shut up!"
One of the all-time GREAT moments in LIVE television, it was.
