Name a song that is a private favorite of yours
Something you're most likely to listen to in your more private moments.

Mine: Deacon Blues by Steely Dan.

7. Stars Fell On Alabama
I just like that song.
When I was in college, my fraternity had a formal dance at The Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Alabama on Mobile Bay.
Circa 1960.

http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/ptlal-grand-hotel-marriott-resort-golf-club-and-spa/

It was spring and there was an outdoor ballroom. There was great band. More like an orchestra. We were all in tuxes and the girls were in ball gowns.
I remember thinking this looked like a scene from The Great Gatsby. The book. The movie wouldn't be shot for many years.

It was just about as close to dead solid perfect as anything I've ever attended.
And the musicians played Stars Fell On Alabama.
Under the moonlight.
And the magnolias.
Man!
:-)

9. Cat Stevens, Father & Son,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlGLuRlhW3c&feature=related

It was a life-changer for me, and probably quite a few others. A succinct and beautifully rendered description of the dialogue that takes place between parent and child in homes all over the world, and I gotta admit for me it's tough to listen to it still without tearing up which is why I always listen to it alone.

and they all
tug at my heart

like

The Williams brothers
Can't cry hard enough

I'm gonna live my life
like every days' the last
without a simple goodbye it all goes by so fast

and now that you're gone I can't cry heard enough
I can't cry hard enough
for you to hear me now

gonna open my eyes and see for the first time
I've let go of you like
a child letting go of his kite

There it goes up in the sky
there it goes beyond the clouds
for no reason why
I can't cry hard enough
No, I can't cry hard enough for you to hear me now

gonna look back in vain and see you standing there
when all that remains is just an empty chair
anad now that you're gone
I can't cry hard enough, I can't cry hard enough
for you to hear me now

There it goes, up in the sky
there it goes beyond the clouds
for no reason why
I can't cry hard enough, no I can't cry hard enough
for you to hear me now

19. "The Minstrel Boy"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgR5G0Toyx4

The Minstrel Boy to the war is gone
In the ranks of death you will find him;
His father's sword he hath girded on,
And his wild harp slung behind him;"
Land of Song!" said the warrior bard,
"Tho' all the world betrays thee,
One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard,
One faithful harp shall praise thee!"

The Minstrel fell! But the foeman's chain
Could not bring that proud soul under;
The harp he lov'd ne'er spoke again,
For he tore its chords asunder;
And said "No chains shall sully thee,
Thou soul of love and brav'ry!
Thy songs were made for the pure and free,
They shall never sound in slavery!"

The Minstrel Boy will return we pray
When we hear the news we all will cheer it,
The minstrel boy will return one day,
Torn perhaps in body, not in spirit.
Then may he play on his harp in peace,
In a world such as Heaven intended,
For all the bitterness of man must cease,
And ev'ry battle must be ended.

My father would sing this song of Irish Rebellion as he drove when we were little kids.

20. Superstar by the Carpenters.
Yeah, that's right, go ahead and laugh.
There are many reasons for liking a song:
the melody, the arrangement, the lyrics or
any combination therein.
A song can also recall a certain time and place
with a special someone and that memory is yours alone.
The sadness I feel now is a small price to pay for
the happiness of that time.
Just don't tell my friends about this.

"Basically the whole musical..."

Me too. From the lyrics to the composition to the plot, I find it one of the richest pieces of contemporary music available to me. Pity the Child-- one of the most heart wrenching wails of internalized anguish ever put to music.

Imagine though my surprise when I find out who wrote the score....

30. [link] One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded
"Temporary and Eternal"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XVVkbUwprc

This song has meant a lot to me. It's not just beautiful because of the song and her phenomenal multi-octave voice, but the lyrics are searing. It's about being at the end of your life and looking back, wondering if anything could have been done differently, how just when you "get it" and know what you need to know to live a full life, you die. It's a sad song, but inspirational in an odd way. It's not religious, but it is spiritual if you choose to look at it that way. I'm an atheist and I love it so much it doesn't matter.

That version is a live version (they were recording during this performance) and appears on a gorgeous album called The Keep. The whole album can be heard here:
http://rhodesongs.com/music/thekeep/index.html

The original version (even more ethereal) can be heard here:
http://rhodesongs.com/music/equipoise/index.html (it's song #7)

Both versions can be downloaded here:
http://wretchawry.com/happy/samples/
(scroll down to The Keep for the first version, and Equipoise for the second)

The lyrics (btw, I have permission to post all this):

Temporary And Eternal

He is broken, far from free
Words were spoken, 'tween him and me
"I had friends, yes, I was admired
I'm so old now, feel so tired"

Well he walks to the gate and he looks behind
at life in rewind
And wishes he had known these things
while still alive

He can see reason in everything
"Where do I go to get my wings"

Going to fly

She sees faces in her home
Wonders why they (don't) leave her alone
"You must know child, I am all here
They think I'm failing, senile, I fear"

Well she walks to the gate and she looks behind
at life in rewind
And wishes she had known these things
while still alive

"I can see the purpose now and all I've learned
All the roads and where they've turned
I can see, I can see everything, the total truth
I'm ready for another youth"

Going to fly
