Can I just take a minute to rant about the sucky night I had? (longish, sorry)
(and perhaps get some sympathy or vodka?)

So my 15 year old gets a call from a friend asking her to play at the open mic at our local coffee house, (outstanding, great, really proud of her!) She then shocks me almost into silence by asking if she can take her 13 year old sister along (WTF? and it was her very own idea!). Since it is a mere 4 blocks away, I let them walk.

I started looking forward to a quiet night of Noggin with the but tutcher (while I read my new Christopher Moore book), basking in the knowledge that all was right with my world for a change. Suddenly, I sense a disturbance in the force, the new kitten had somehow gotten herself trapped behind the water heater (I was tipped off by the high pitched desperate mewing coming through the plumbing). I managed to free her with minimal damage to my hands (I might rethink this whole declawing thing), crisis averted, I settle back on the couch, sipping my tea and thinking about how adorable the but tutcher is when he is quiet.

Then, for reasons known only to a 6 year old autastic boy, he begins crying that he never wants to wear a Captain Underpants costume on Halloween (why this idea occurred to him, the world will never know). His crying escalates into a full blown melt down of hysterical proportions (tears, choking on sobs, snot bubbles, unintelligible speech)and no matter how much I assured him that it would never happen, the tears just kept on falling until I was about ready to join him. After 45 minutes of this, I convince him that he is exhausted and the only remedy is going to bed and snuggling with mommy.

Just when his body stops heaving, I get a text message from the 15 year old "Mom, I did awesome and they want me to come back next week", I reply "I am so proud of you and love you both", she texts back "what do you mean both, isn't (sisters name) home, she left 45 minutes ago". My phone then rings and the older one says "I am leaving now and will go find her" (I was willing to wait a few minutes before I got hysterical, the younger one is a notorious space case and I thought maybe she stopped at the library on her way home). 5 minutes later, the wayward 13 year old walks in the door.

I call the older sister (who is now on her way home, probably checking dumpsters for her siblings mutilated corpse, she tends to worst case scenario things) to give her the happy news and she collapses in hysterics (much like the but tutcher, including the part where I can't understand a word she is saying). After about 5 minutes I finally understand the words "called" and "police" (Yes, she had called the police to report her sister missing) just as there is a Gestapo like knock on my front door. After the officer heard my tale of woe, he admonished the younger one "You owe your sister a big apology and your mom a weeks worth of chores".

Ah, the joys of motherhood!

49. You just inadvertently coined a new word!
for reasons known only to a 6 year old autastic boy,

I can easily see "autastic" sweeping through the burgeoning autism self-advocacy community! Sort of like the old "The NBA. It's 'fan'-tastic!"

Speaking of which, we have a DU Group devoted to the subject:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=387

Who would have thought that I would have something in common with the but tutcher? (Don't answer that...)

51. Actually, it was not inadvertent...
my dear friend oshyposhy (who blazed the trail for me in how to parent an autistic child) and her 14 year old autistic son came up with it.

So, is it the tutching of buts you share with the but tutcher? :P

55. Ya know...
even though I parent the autastic but tutcher, I had always framed it in my mind "How do I cope with him" (don't get me wrong, I wouldn't change him for the world but the challenges are different than with my Neuro-typ. kids). I am sad to say that it had not yet occurred to me that maybe I should just reframe the issue. Thank you!
