Guys, what was the worst valentine's gift you ever gave?
I spend a load of money to have a dozen red roses delivered to her workplace and placed on her desk. She called me at work and told me the flowers were really bad, and when i got there after work I found they were all very dead, dried up, petals falling off and turned brown.

I took them back to the florist - 5PM Valentine's day crowded with forgetful guys, held them in the air and yelled "These things are crap!"
(I can yell pretty loud, too.)
This got the managers attention, and I got fresh flowers and an appology, and never went back. I also noticed some potential customers leaving after they saw those dead roses.

Next?

3. I don't give anything anymore
My wife and I figured out a long time ago that Valentine's day is highly over commercialized so we mostly boycott it.

I might buy her a card (which I did this year). I typically fix her a nice dinner at home, but we don't go out. Traditionally Valentine's day for us is Filet Mignon night. The way we look at it is if you're only taking the time to renew your relationship once per year, you're already sunk anyway. We got tired of the crowds, shitty flowers, and all the other nonsense.

About every other month we drop the kids off at the grandparents and get out of town for the weekend. I send her flowers throughout the year when they are not over shipped and crappy. We go out on "dates" often enough that there's no need to do it specifically on Valentine's day.

I asked my other half when we were joined to never waste money sending me something that will die in pretty short order. That and knowing that most of those beautiful cut flowers come from the hands of South American women working for slave wages. Ah, free trade. Ain't it great?

17. RQ: I thought it was mainly a guy thing, in that most guys
would appreciate getting nearly anything for free, even if you were too cheap to buy him a real card.

That's how I see it anyway.

I'd much rather get a hand-made card than a storebought one... always.

6. Complete Works of Lenin. Good deal at a garage sale, maybe 40 volumes for $5.
Probably didn't want to carry them up to the attic after his wife asked him to clear out the garage. Something like that. Printed on cheap Soviet paper but good condition. Irresistible at about a dime a volume

You'd think anybody studying art history would be thrilled. But no. Wasn't even nice about it either. Few days later, she decided -- for some reason -- to move them all downstairs to the lobby. Alone, on a Friday night. I mean, really. Wasn't my fault the service elevator died between floors. Heard about it Monday

Take home lesson. Getting stuck in a elevator is no biggie compared to starving in India. But don't point that out

15. When I was 16, I gave my girlfriend a pretty heart-shaped
box of chocolates. Sounds OK, huh? Well, I found out later that they were all covered with white dust. The store I bought them from had brought out the unsold chocolates from the year before. Of course, the box was sealed, so I didn't look at the actual chocolates.

She told me about it, and I took the box back to the store, with my father along for the return. They tried to lie their way out of it, but my dad is not someone to toy with. I left the store with a whole bunch of chocolates.

My girlfriend forgave me. I cannot mention what the gift she gave me for Valentine's day, though.

19. Want to add, when I worked with a lot of women in a hospital,
I was frequently asked what I got my wife for V-day.
I always said I got her a new ironing board cover - a nice one,though...

Women can be so foul-mouthed!

(Really, we went out or had a nice dinner at home cooked by me, which is usually better. We have an ironing board somewhere, but haven't seen it in this century.)

29. my poor hubby
February is a VERY expensive month for him as there is

Our Wedding Anniversary on the 4th
V-Day on the 14th and
My Sobriety Date on the 28th

usually he just lumps them all into something sparkly and expensive

I can't remember a bad gift though.... this Valentines Day he replaced all the hardware in the kitchen for me, new pulls, knobs and hinges and they look FABULOUS~~!!!

:bounce:

31. I came home with stitches...
Lyric and i had been together for almost 2 years, and the factory where i worked was running full-tilt Valentine's night (i worked 3rd shift).

I had been at work for all of a couple of hours, when one of the machines broke down (wasn't calibrated properly, so it started destroying product). I went to clear the debris and get it back running, and i caught my thumb in between a couple of gears, and nearly severed the first segment of it off.

Spent the night in the ER having it repaired by a hand surgeon, and got done and released just in time to go home at the normal time.

Lyric reminded me that she has originally suggested that i call in sick that night. *L*
