An unusual man, Lincoln... Stubborn as a mule, at times utterly incompetent, but humble enough to learn from his mistakes and keep going. He had lived a life in which he had known almost only failure, and yet instead of discouraging him, it gave him patience to face a long war and outlast many of his opponents. We were lucky to have him when we did, and he was lucky to be as quick a study as he was, or he would have been a great disaster.

But he risked much and gained all, so we salute him.
