9. There is such a thing as "Riblets"
They are a subset of baby back ribs. Some butchers will separate the "riblets" from the baby back and sell those two as separate cuts.

What Applebees calls "riblets" actually aren't riblets at all. They are simply cartilage that is surrounded by meat and is usually a trim piece from baby backs.

18. I worked for a shipping company
that served "riblets". I asked the Captain WTF these riblet things were and they turned out to be a spam-like product shaped similar to what the Metal Lock company uses to repair broken engine blocks.

25. The US has no culinary marketing standards for "ribs"
So retailers are free to call them whatever they want. That's why McDonalds can sell axle grease on a bun and call it "McRibs".

I asked our server what riblets were, and he said they were just some disgusting cartilage and not to order them.

He got a great tip.

Rib tibs are delicious. Actually any park of the pig is delicious prepared correctly.

Anyway, I have never had what Applebees calls riblits, but I am aware that they are rib tips.

If you have never had rib tips then that says a lot about you than this restuarant.

84. Applebee's riblits aren't rip tips
The cut that Applebees serves is actually cartilage near the backbone of the pig and really has nothing to do with ribs other than being trimmed from the baby back. Since they have no bones, they aren't actually ribs at all.

Rib tips, which is what you're referring comes from the underside of the pig and is a trim piece from the spare ribs. These contain bones and are actually ribs, but just a subset of the spare ribs that most butchers trim off.

I have both eaten and prepared both cuts myself, and I have had what Applebees calls Riblits. They are generally throw away or butcher's take home cuts, and I'm sure Applebees gets them at a really good price.

43. Chili's is the only restaurant listed I've been to recently
The turkey sandwich is pretty good and I once got the soup/sandwich combo. I picked the broccoli cheddar soup and it was so cheesy. It was like queso dip, not soup. I couldn't eat it.

154. About 12 years ago my daughter and I stopped in at Chilis for lunch...
It was late in the afternoon, so I suspect they were "recovering" from the lunch rush. Anyway, the sound system was extremely loud and blaring "Rockzac" when my daughter and I were seated. The waitress came over and asked what we wanted (drinks), and I asked hypothetically "could you turn down the music?" then we gave her our drink orders. The next thing I know the "manager" comes over to our table and asks, "Is there a problem here?" I simply reiterated my concerns (I didn't really expect to see "the manager;" I suppose the waitress informed him of "The Problem" at Table XYZ." Anyway, I was a little miffed and ended my concerns with something like, "...you couldn't just turn it off, could you?" The manager looked sternly at me and replied:

We can turn it down, but we can't turn it off!

For years, that remark became a favorite comment when my family engaged in echolalia of bizarre moments!

I haven't eaten at Chilis since...

I had some beef n cheese nachos with NO peppers.

Don't know what they seasoned 'em with, but I was belching all night, had stomach pain and got up and commuted to the throne room a lot that night.

...Eastern & Midwest chain, which explains why I've never heard of it.

Looks like the standard Yup-scale TGI Fridays comfort food grease palace...the first thing I saw when the Web Site popped up was "Triple Sampler: A generous sampler of guest favorites: stuffed potato skins, chicken tenderloins (Buffalo or plain) and mozzarella cheese sticks."

Although some "motor lodges" still survive. But Howard Johnson's was the evil chain from without which there would be no evil restaurant chains.

I sometimes wonder if, on some abandoned railroad siding somewhere, there isn't a forgotten tank car full of HoJo Cola.

Lake George, New York; Lake Placid, New York; and Bangor, Maine.

Of course, many locations that are still identifiable as HoJos because of the distinctive architecture remain in business under different flags.

They cover everything in spices to try to compensate for the lousy-quality meat.

Cheesecake Factory is another offender that's not in this poll. Their cheesecake is good, but most everything else is like factory food.

...I went to a Campbell Chamber of Commerce lunch at the one on Campbell Avenue. The steak was tiny, but all I could think about was Rodney Dangerfield's line from "Caddyshack"..."This steak's got whip marks from where the jockey was whipping it"...

There wasn;t a single tender bite in the entire steak. It was pure shoe leather.

61. First Outback I went to was the one on Bascom Ave.
This was about 1996 or '97. I figured they'd have stuff like kangaroo steak and koala burgers. Imagine my dismay upon discovering it's just TGIFridays with Okker Chic names for the food. :eyes:

Yeah, maybe it's "technically" steak.
It come from a cow (somewhere) and it has a bone in it.
Usually well done.
Steak from a steam table.

And watch out for elbows from the Senior Citizens* Early Bird Menu brigade, rushing to pile up their plates and 'get their money's worth'.

*Disclaimer: I am a 'Senior Citizen'.
And when I see them at an 'all-you-can-eat' buffet, I understand why many of us are obese.
Besides, dinner at 5 p.m. is barbaric.

72. i disagree
the golden corral is a step up compared to old country buffet in my neck of the woods. the servers at mine are very nice, and if not too busy will chat until they have other customers to deal with. food is... passable. i love it when they do the special beef grill... "philly" cheesesteaks are good... for a fake.

i've yet to have a bad time at my local GC. the lone time i went to the local old country buffet was hassled by some mid-manager twit because i wanted to spend time doing my crossword puzzle at the tail-end of lunch, which by my reckoning wasn't even busy. though i do give the owner credit for a sense of humor. i complained to him about his mid-manager drone and he did offer to have him quietly killed and held up as an example to the other workers. apparently they'd gotten quite a few complaints in regards to their hospitality.

at GC, i get a nice big table and no one giving me a hard time about doing my crosswords, heck sometimes i get help with them. it's not always about the food sometimes.

as for the customers. more often than not i'm in their when there is a majority of seniors, and they are a hoot to talk to. especially the retired guys during football season.

75. There's a GC in Milwaukee? I miss the GC. I like a buffet,
being veg. I can actually choose things I can eat. I used to live near a GC in Iowa. There are no buffets here--no GC, no Old Country buffet, no Ryan's, nothing. So, I get nostalgic for GC. Maybe I can take my dad one in Milwaukee when I visit up there.

106. I sometimes like buffets.
Cici's pizza isn't very good but it is an economical place to take munchkins and is less likely to break out into violence than Chucky Cheese.

And I have had some nice sunday brunch buffets at various restaurants and hotels.

But Golden Corral is overpriced institutional food. Plain and badly cooked.

I will wait till I am put in a home to eat institutional food again.

I got my fair share with school lunch programs.

My kids love it and I like the steak.

Not sure why you're calling the people who eat there vermin, but when I've talked to guests at adjacent tables they were always nice people, even if they did look like bikers or trailer park residents or what have you.

Sometimes the bullshit I read on this board really makes me sick.

But the food is really bland nonsense. Why not just spend the same money and go to a nicer independent sit down restaurant with reasonable portions.

Allowing picky eaters like my children to order full entrees that they may not eat, when you're on a budget like mine, is frankly irresponsible.

Golden Corral works for me because I can't afford a "nice" place, and the kids can pick and choose whatever they're in the mood for.

As for my taste buds and "not knowing any better"... no. I was homeless for a while so I dunno... I'm the opposite of picky. Food is food for me... it's not a hobby.



IMO posts like yours are a fine example of the ignorance that is endemic in America.

If golden corral was $4.99 a meal I would understand but the one around here runs $17 dollars.

You can get much better food at a local greasy spoon or diner for half the price.

And I certainly have had my share of poverty. But that is little excuse for eating overpriced bland food. IMO.

126. Well yes I have unfortunately.
From a quick web search it seems each franchise sets a different price and the few times I went (Sunday afternoons all) seem to be the highest tabs.

So I will stick by my recollection of $17 including drink (which is separate)

I understand bringing kids there as kids have not developed a taste for good food and will eat anything. In addition one does not have to worry about having a well behaved child at a cafeteria style restaurant as one would in a more proper setting.

The GC near here (about 30 mins away) was wonderful when we used to go to it.
We haven't been for close to four years so I can't speak for it now.

a) The waitress we usually had was a wonderful woman with two kids who loved to talk about our children (both hers and ours)
b) The bread was ALWAYS fresh and hot
c) Steak was cooked to order- never had a issue with shoe leather
d) Was open minded- they tried a new dish with salmon and when I talked to the manager about how they cooked it (It was REALLY dry) he actually took my suggestions and changed it up.
e) They didn't wait until the food on the buffet was "almost gone" to replace it. If it was past time, and not appealing they swapped it out.
f) The salad bar was always fresh and crisp with a good assortment of choices. You could make a meal out of it alone.

The place was clean, efficient and the people there were very nice. Like ANY food chain, they sell their name to private owners. You will get good ones and bad ones.

To call the people who eat there VERMIN. Hrm. Thank you for calling my family disgusting and annoying. And for your info, we are not a "waddle up for thirds" crowd.

When you have two teenage boys with hollow legs, two finicky girls, a mom with a gastric bypass (which they gave me a discount for btw) and a Dad that can eat his weight in steak it only makes sense to go to eat at a place like GC.

Your statement of "Vermin" was NOT Hyperbole. You meant it when you typed it, and it showed your true colors.

I wouldn't un-reccomend it to someone else, but for some reason when I even look at the sign I think of really heavy food and getting stuffed. I've only been there once, and I honestly don't remember it that much to say whether or not the food is really good or really bad, but this is just some instinctual thing I get about it.

On edit: Maybe it's just because they push pie and the thought of eating dessert at a restaurant after a big generous meal gives me that stuffed feeling. Just thinking about it.

68. Applebee's, I will never go to one again....
This happened about 8 years ago and we have not been to one since then. My husband, who is African American, our 3yr old daughter and I went to have dinner there one evening. We were seated near a group of people and an employee was also sitting with them. They kept looking at us and whispering. One person decided to actually say something loud enough for us to hear, "That's just wrong". They kept looking and pointing. We decided to ask for the manager and guess who was at the table with the group, the manager. I have told all family members and friends what happened and none of them have been to one either.

I had three TINY bites of their food. Belched and burped all night. Got up and raided the fridge for milk to drink, because I was a houseguest and was hungry, since I couldn't eat their "Chinese takeout".

92. I've always hated Marie Callender's the most because I had a HORRIBLE experience there.
I worked there very briefly in my youth, and suffered at the cruel hands of an enormous eight-foot tall "woman" who was actually a nazi clad in gray, woolen pants that were skin-tight, inducing massive, turgid camel toe which burned my eyes and gave me nightmares.

She was the manager, and one of the few people I actually wished death upon on a regular basis.

I quit after loudly telling her to go fuck herself in front of the entire lunch rush crowd, and to this day, I pray she was sliced from stem to sternum by those horrible EVIL pants.

Is it evil as in sinful, as in their food will lead to your eventual heart attack, or evil as in just unappetizing?

Nothing pops out at me in the latter catagory. Most chain restaraunts manage to put out managable, average but unspectacular food, which can either be considered a curse or a blessing.

The local Safeway sells these in the frozen section. I guess they are purchased by:

1). People who don't live near a White Castle and have such a monkey on their back that they're willing to buy tiny frozen hamburgers

2). People who don't realize they can drive to McDonald's, Carl's Jr., Jack In The Box, Burger King, or In 'n' Out and get a burger

3). Stoners who walk by the frozen section and go "Woah, dude...check it...a whole box of White castles"

That must have been horrible for you! But there are plenty of therapists in Connecticut, and you certainly seem able to pay for a few years of treatment. I'm sure you'll be able to work through the trauma.

Children in restaurants. And they were probably eating things like potatoes, and other *gasp* starches! I'm surprised you're able to maintain enough equilibrium to post your elitist bullshit.

My advice to you--never leave Connecticut. The number of working class vermin, and their children, in the rest of the world will send you into a coma.

146. You just stumbled onto a DU sore spot and one that
huge flame wars have erupted over. I once posted about a 3-year-old in a restaurant who screamed nonstop for a half hour and then threw a plate in my direction while the mother ignored the entire tirade. I realize the kid was probably tired and it was the mother's fault, but there are DUers who defended the parent and kid and told me I should have stayed home.

I have no problem at all with families of all sizes in restaurants as long as parents remain mindful of other diners and don't let their kids run wild. Sadly, that is not always the case.

152. I just got the feeling that perhaps the restaurant in
question was a little chaotic because of all the kids and maybe that wasn't what the poster had anticipated.

I know there was no mention of screaming/throwing plates. I was just relaying what happened to me one time when I posted on DU about my own restaurant experience. "Kids in restaurants" is definitely a button pusher here.

By the way, I'm a mom and removed my own daughter more than once from a restaurant when she was small and started to act up. It's definitely a balancing act - trying to eat a meal, keep a little one occupied, and not annoy other diners. As long as the adults realize that they are not at home and need to keep a watchful eye on the kids, I don't care how many children are present.

great central valley - Modesto or someplace like it. Anyhow, husband and I were given a window table, and the ledge was covered in dead flies. Typing that makes me gag. We didn't stay.

However, my daughter's best friend's dad owns a bunch of Dennys and does very well, so someone is dining in those fine establishments.

Went to Missouri a couple of years ago.

Ate at a Bob Evans, not knowing anything about it.

Had some beef stroganoff on noodles.

The meat had too much fat and yuck in it. I asked the waitress if she could do anything about it, and she said, no, they got all their food frozen, and all the other batches would be the same way. She was apologetic but couldn't do anything.

I wasn't happy, but I thought it was sad that the waitress couldn't come up with better quality meat.

Never going to another Bob Evans.
