hard to stay feeling lonely and depressed when you're doubled over laughing, half at what you're watching, and half at yourself for laughing at what you're watching. And the Stooges helped save my dad's life, I'm convinced . My stepmom died at 90 yrs old a little over a year ago. My dad had been with her when she had the stroke.... I got there ( Chicago) the next day, and along with my brother and sister in law, stayed with him 24-7 for the next few days. They'd been married for 38 years, and of course he was devastated. Every Saturday night in Chicago, they have 2 hours of the Stooges on a local cable channel.( or maybe not cable, I don't remember). Anyway, we were pretty worried about him; its not uncommon for an elderly spouse to die not long after losing a longtime partner. He seemed to not care if he lived; we could hardly get him to eat , or do much of anything... My brother and I are quite the stooge-o-philes ( I think I appreciate especially Curly's comic genius now even more than I did as a kid). So that Saturday night we suggested watching; that a little laughter would be good for him, but he said he didn't want to laugh, didn't want to smile, didn't want us to put it on. But we did, and after a little while, for the first time since my stepmother's death, we saw a little smile involuntarily forming on the corners of his mouth, and within a few minutes, he couldn't stop himself from laughing out loud. Not unrestrained, uproarious laughter or anything, but laughter nonetheless, while he said how stupid it was but yet so funny he couldn't help laughing at it....That night I knew he'd be OK ,and he still is ...doing OK that is...Moved into a retirement Apt., not even assisted living ( and he's almost 91) Driving again, doing a half hour a day on the exercycle(!) and watches the Stooges almost every Saturday night, and still talks about how stupid and juvenile it is, and that he can't believe he's laughing at such silly juvenile stuff, but again, can't stop himself, especially"that Curly--he's crazy". My sister in law laughs at me and my brother and jokingly tells us she can't believe we've "corrupted" him; this serious and sometimes dour 91 year old now considers Moe Larry and Curly( and occasionally Shemp) pretty much appointment TV.
