"Beware of the Dogs" signs. Best investment ever.
I have a sign on each gate in my yard. One can't reasonably breach my property line without being forewarned that there may be dogs about. Anywho, I don't have any dogs outside right now, but the signs still kept the Bright House cable shill the hell out of my yard.

That's right, sit out there and beep your horn. I'm not coming to you, either. Not that I'm happy with Verizon, but you guys suck worse. And I'd lose BBCAmerica...a fate I'd rather not consider.

1. But you forgot one contingent.
The dryer delivery guy contingent. I don't think they know how to read.

3. I missed the dryer guy, flvegan
and what you ended up getting. Is there a link? Care to retell the story?

9. I wish I had a security camera.
My YouTube would have been famous.

I wound up with the Maytag. It was the best deal, and I have 5 years worth of in-house warranty. It's allegedly commercial grade, so we'll see.

11. I had to replace my dryer in the fall.
I got a Maytag too, but it's a natural gas dryer. This old house would have to have a total electrical upgrade to handle a 220 outlet. My fear is moving and not being able to use it and it's brand new. I love it by the way.

7. If they run out of the signs,

you can always impale the remains of your enemies on a large pike in the same general area. Hey, it worked back in the day.

10. Code Enforcement got pissy with me for doing that.
I don't think I'll just get another warning if I do that again.

It'll take only one Code Enforcement guy getting impaled, and they'll never get pissy with you again.

14. I want to put up "Beware of dogs" signage- will the neighbors laugh at me?
I believe it would discourage potential criminals from considering my home as a target. (It couldn't hurt, could it?) The problem I have is the neighbors who know my dogs would find it humorous as my guys are not what most would consider "guard dogs".

18. If you want to discourage criminals.

don't do just the sign. Add a BIG food and water bowl, and also a heavy chain that's like bolted to the house. Advice from a former burglar (in a how to prevent crime seminar).

19. No, and here's why.
The signs have two purposes, the first being to discourage crims (as DA stated above, a big bowl and heavy chain are good props, too). Secondly, there is case law out there that has put negligence squarely on the Plaintiff in homeowner lawsuits over dogbites (sorry, no case cite for you, and I'm too lazy to check my Westlaw right now) when signs were clearly posted and they were ignored.

If they laugh, tell them it what done to protect your assets. If they have dogs, they'd be wise to get them as well.

21. Yep.
"Invitees". And more often than not, the plantiff will win if there weren't any signs warning the invitee before walking onto the property.

And I let them try to figure it out before they run out of time. About 4.3 seconds usually.

No, just stupid ones.
If they're dumb enough to come into a yard with large barking dogs.

22. Years ago, I heard that
"Beware of Dogs" signs were a bad idea because it was an admission that your dogs were known to be dangerous. And if you knew your dogs were dangerous and did nothing to deter them, and then they bit someone, you were more likely to be found at fault... for harboring a dangerous animal or something... Is that way off the mark?

24. Yes, that's way off the mark.
You are in effect, putting someone on notice that there are dogs present, not that there are bad dogs present. As I stated above in one of my responses, there is case law that put the negligence on the plaintiff in certain cases where they were suing a homeowner over a dog bite when signs like that were present.

It is true that a dog can be dangerous if someone enters their territory uninvited and unknown to them, but it's reasonable to expect that a dog will protect his/her/their people and territory as well. Therefore, it's reasonable to expect that a warning that there are dogs present should deter anyone from coming onto property unannounced.

25. LOL, thanks! :)
I think it was your earlier mention of case law that reminded me of what I had heard before... Thanks for the clarification. :)

I have two big ol' dogs, one with a wonderfully deep and menacing bark, who have free run of the house and the back yard, so I don't worry about intruders too much.

Thanks again. :hi:
