Today must be the day for cats to die
Edited on Mon Feb-16-09 06:14 PM by lizziegrace
We got Casey when she was a kitten. 8 years ago I lived in a place where I couldn't have cats. My ex-inlaws took Casey and a friend kept Widget for me for a year. I didn't ask for Casey when I could have cats again since they had grown so attached to her. They spoiled her rotten and she's had a great home. I couldn't ask for better owners for Casey.

Lelapin just called me to say her grandmother called her to say that Casey had gone into renal failure. She was 18 and the options were limited. They put her to sleep this afternoon.

I know she had the best life. It's hard knowing she's gone. My MIL is devastated.

1. Aww, no, poor Casey.
:( She had a good long run. 18 is a long life for a cat.

2. It is a good run
Lelapin just called me. She was sobbing - because she'll miss Casey but also because she knows how much her grandmother is hurting. :(

7. This brings a couple things home
My inlaws lost a member of their family. It also reminds them (MIL is 75 and FIL is 80) that these are the last pets they'll have in their lives. They had to put one of their dogs down a few months ago and Casey today. They have one dog left and then a house that had pets since the 50's will be empty. I'd be sobbing too. I am, actually. I love them and don't like to accept that they're getting old. Damn.

26. why do they have to be pet-less?
I think that's a mistake. Old peeps need pets as much or more than anyone else. If their long-time companions cross over, well, there are many many animals who still need a loving home. If the peeps are able to care for an animal, I see no reason not to get another to love. If the pet outlives the human, well, then find another caretaker for it.

My auntie was near death last April. She lives in a senior facility with different levels of care. They moved her into the higher level of care and put her cat down. Guess what? Auntie recovered. Really recovered. She started a dinner club at the facility, goes on bus outings, is walking again, wants her stuff that was dispersed and given away, and mourns her cat.

6. I'm so sorry, lizziegrace
I did that, too - we moved and good friends kept one of our girls. I am convinced Lindakitty helped our friend get through prostate cancer; she was with him continually and he was devastated when she died.

We just got back from burying TommyCat. I am so sorry for their pain, and yours.

12. So sorry, lizziegrace
There is so little one can do to comfort a person grieving over a beloved pet. I feel my mother's loss of her dear kitty Purrl some months ago (of RF and at a relatively young age) I wish she would give another kitteh a home, but I think she thinks she is too old to start with another pet. Yet the house is so quiet without the cat talking and my mother answering ...

Sending comforting vibes to you and your MIL.
