15. FYI: The original Broadway soundtrack is MUCH better than the movie version.

Natalie Wood had her voice dubbed by Marni Nixon, who also dubbed Deborah Kerr in The King and I, and Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady.

The original soundtrack with Carol Lawrence is much better. Musical direction by famous conductor Max Goberman, whose nephew is a guy I went to law school with.

I love Wicked, “What is this feeling?” always makes me laugh. really anything from Wicked. I wrote my senior paper on Wicked and community.
FInally, I can’t decide between “A little fall of rain” and “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables” from Les Miserables.
Then there’s a thousand other songs from musicals that I love.
It’s my favorite musical genre. I can’t decide.

10. I couldn't pick just three, so here's more than three, sorry!

1. "Another Hundred People" from Company. I LOVE this song. It's fundamentally depressing when you think about it, but it sounds so...uplifting. I love songs like that.

2. "Johanna" from Sweeney Todd. The Act 2 version. A sweet, mournful song that is set to the sound of throats being slashed. Creepily beautiful.

3. "Solomon Song" from Threepenny Opera. Brief, spare, mournful...heh, my tastes are obvious, yes?

4. "Something Just Broke" from Assassins. Assassins is majorly underrated. It's a really stark and interesting look at America from a perspective you wouldn't expect. This song comes towards the end, and humanizes the overall theme. Guess what? It's mournful. :P

5. "Sunday" from Sunday in the Park with George. This one is actually beautiful and uplifting. It ends as the play ends...a blank canvas with infinite possibilities.

As you may be able to tell...I love Sondheim. :D

Don Giovanni. The best opera ever written. Too much good stuff to pick out one.

The Marriage of Figaro. Right behind Don Giovanni.

La Boheme, Tosca, Madame Butterfly, Turandot (that's pronounced with a hard "T" at the end). :D
Those are all by Giacomo Puccini. He was the Hit Parade guy of his day, from 1890 to 1924.


Anything by Mozart or Puccini is good stuff. They can keep Wagner and Strauss. Too heavy.


The Elixir of Love by Donizetti. A delightful comic opera.

Lost in the Stars from Lost in the Stars, by Kurt Weill. Great stuff.

A CD called "The Unknown Kurt Weill" sung by Teresa Stratas. A bunch of obscure stuff she dug up and performed in recital. Was put on a CD. Absolutely stunning.
