My ultra-right-wing wealthy evangelical in-laws are having shit fits over President Obama. |
|
I was talking to my step-daughter last night, and she told me that her grandmother, (my m-i-l) cried all day on Inauguration Day, and is terrified that President Obama is going to take away all their money, their guns, and force them to recant their so-called "Christianity." Oh, and one of my step-daughter's cousins told her that: "You only voted for Obama because you're poor!" The cousin, her sisters, and their mother have been leeching off my in-laws for years, and none of them has a real job. OTOH, my step-daughter and her husband both work for a living, and they both voted for Barack Obama. I'm so proud of them. She was raised in a conservative Christian Republican household, but in 2004, she cast her vote for Kerry, because she wanted a good future for her son. This year, she and her husband (who is from rural Georgia (!) ) couldn't wait to vote for Obama, and are tickled to death that he's the President.
I hate to think that my in-laws will be even more intolerable now than they were during the Bush years, but that's the way it's shaping up...

1. Ask them if you can have the Mercedes when the Rapture comes ... |
|
They won't be needing it, after all.

You know, it really is true what they say about some people: stay away from politics and religion as conversational topics. If you avoid those landmines, my in-laws seem quite normal. My father-in-law is a very wealthy contractor, but if you asked him what he did for a living, he say: "I was a truck driver." They're both generous and kind, and a little bubble-headed, but it can be tough to see the crazy sometimes. It's just a few subjects that make people ka-wacka-wacka...

3. Don't underestimate rural Georgia |
|
After all, our 39th president was from a very small town in southeastern Georgia called Plains.

10. Carter is the kind of evangelical I can respect |
|
He LIVES his faith.
That aside, I am sorry you have difficult in-laws. :-(

4. "...wealthy evangelical..." |
|
So JC's admonition of poverty and the preference of spiritual over worldly things don't count anymore.

5. Of course not. Tell a rich person that Jesus said that it is easier for a camel to go through |
|
the eye of a needle than for a rich person to get into Heaven, he'll start building really big needles and breeding really teeny-tiny camels...

I feel your pain, SERIESLY!
You haven't lived until your Rabid Repug brother sends you Rush style " information" emails ad nauseam!
Then- he gives our 89 year old mother one of O'Leilly's books for Christmas, which she can't read( poor eyesight) and she wants me to read to her.
I drew the line there. I love her to pieces, but either he buys her audio books, or he reads the damn thing to her, himself. He visits several times a month.
God- do I hear you!!
Hang in there, my dear.

8. If your faith in Christianity is so weak that someone could "force" you to recant it |
|
then you aren't much of a Christian to begin with, IMHO.
