I know I'm definitely above average in some areas (namely, verbal skills and knowledge of sociopolitical issues) compared to others my age. I also know I am average-to-epic-fail in others.

7. The problem is that many people who are dumber than average... |
|
are too dumb to know it. People tend to hold overly favorable views of their abilities in many social and intellectual domains. The authors suggest that this overestimation occurs, in part, because people who are unskilled in these domains suffer a dual burden: Not only do these people reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices, but their incompetence robs them of the metacognitive ability to realize it.http://www.apa.org/journals/features/psp7761121.pdf

but never achieved much with the high level of intelligence and talent my creator blessed me with, and will go to my grave haunted by this fact. I constantly compare myself to old college buddies who have achieved stunning levels of success... one of em just today in fact won a George Polk award for international journalism ( he's already won a Pulitzer...) and his roommate back then became the CEO of the Center for American Progress( and chief of Obama's transition team etc). I first met them when I was one of the few freshmen to be picked for an honors political science seminar at our college ( Barry and John were a year ahead of me) . I've spent most of my adult life as a part-time bar and party musician, and substitute teacher. Lesson here is that god-given intelligence isn't enough; gotta do something with it too...But I was once upon a time considered the intellectual equal of people like these guys.

15. Poll won't allow me to select both Yes and No. |
|
I am smarter than some other people. Then some other people are smarter than me.
Ask me to fix a broken computer, or to wangle out the mysteries of credit cards - I'm there.
Ask me to do medical surgery or lawyering - well... send me to school first please and be patient, it'll take me years to get there.

Heck no... and were I to guess, I'd imagine I'm well within the Average category. But I'm rather happy with who I turned out to be, so I think I have that particular advantage over most other people.
More often than not, whenever I hear or see someone advertising how incredibly smart or clever they believe themselves to be, the first thing that comes to mind is, "whoa, your parents must not have hugged you much when you were a kid..."
