A rant about Monday's Heroes (with spoiler alert) |
|
I was really pissed off how they protrayed liberals/Obama's people. If you don't follow the show it's about people who have developed super powers. This season they government, lead by some right wingnut senator (who ironically has his own super power) is rounding these people up and imprisioning them. Anyway there was a woman from Home Land Security, who was very upset by these unconstitutional round ups and illegal imprisonment and torture. She was all ready to shut them down and notify the AG to go after the Senator. So the bad guys, arrange to have one of the captured super heroes escape and in the process she kills one of her captures. This causes the liberal woman (who presumably Obama appointed) to abandon the constitution and toss their rights out of window out a fear. I am sorry but really pissed me off. Liberals are not some whimpy misguided fools that drop all their beliefs and ethics at the first sign of fear. It was a really crappy message the Heroes people is sending the American public. In fact liberals almost universally are braver and more like to stick to their values, than conservatives (at least that's what I have observed).

1. The show started when Bush was president... |

and there hasn't been any mention of an election. So I don't know if you can conclude that this is about Obama. And with regards to civil rights, this is fertile ground for scifi: do you alter the notion of civil rights when superhumans are involved? This was dealt with a little bit in the Alien Nation series, but not nearly enough. The ACLU (in the series) wanted the newcomers to be afforded the same rights as humans. However, they were smarter and stronger. That natural inequality could have produced some major social inequalities. What's the proper response? With regards to Heroes, would adjusting the notion of civil rights be all that different from adjusting rights with regard to more advanced weaponry or from how we quarantine people who have communicable diseases? Tough questions--which is why science fiction can be lots of fun!

2. I look at it this way. Would a Bush HLS person care about |
|
anyone's civil rights? I agree this is an interesting topic to explore. I also think that it can be considered a parellel to the fear driven acts our nation has taken against terrorists and Muslims/Arabs. I just don't like the characterization that liberals will drop all their values and stands the moment they get frightened. I don't think that is very realistic because liberals have been fighting against all sorts of fear drive constitutional violations.

3. I don't see it as a slam against Obama |

:eyes:
The President is played by Michael Dorn, who probably got the role because of all the ST cross-overs & in jokes. I'm hoping Nimoy shows up at Sylar's father.
It's well-known that Heroes is a televised comic book, so trying to equate what's being portrayed on screen as what's happening IRL is a bit of a stretch.

6. Brilliant! From one Spock to another. |

I, for one, have this strange feeling that that creepy special forces guy working with Nathan Petrelli is Sylar's father. Don't know why, but I think he has ulterior motives.

and other Americans of good conscience. It seems they think we are willing to drop all we stand for, at the slightest hint of danger. Sorry but liberals are made of sterner stuff, in my opinion.

11. Are you kidding? It's one of the most liberal shows on TV |
|
showing that the government is out to get & kill off the Heroes who only want to live out their lives as normally as possible (with the exception of Sylar) & using unconstitutional & immoral methods to do so.
