Two computer questions for you guys.
I don't know how quickly I can reply, but here we go.

Got the Trojan from Hell Wednesday and I can't get rid of out. XP Pro running. Ran SpyBot, Malware.... nada. Any thoughts?

Also, having to use the used laptop I bought BabyM for now and the fonts are really small. Small icons, etc. You get the drift. XP Home.

I'd appreciate any assistance.

Thanks.

4. I'd sy the small icons etc are because the display resolution has been changed,
which can b adjusted in the control panel. Don't know about the Trojan, I've been fortunate enough to have no experience in that area...

9. You wouldn't believe how long it took CA to figure that out.
His daily rant: "Fuck! My system's all fucked up again!"

me (because I fucking hate AVG): "Maybe you should get rid of the AVG--I don't think it works too well."

This went on for oh, six months, before he goes "Hey, maybe I should get rid of the AVG--I don't think it works too well."

:eyes:

And he's all computer smart and everything (MOST of the time). But he's not allowed to touch my computer without supervision.

7. If the program didn't disable it you can use the system restore
to roll you computer back to before you picked up the trojan. If that doesn't work you can down load the various programs from here:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

and keep trying until you find one that deletes it

10. Take it from me. Stay away from the Monterey County, CA
tax assessor site. Holy Shit. Talk about the trojan to end all trojans.

Still not fixed, but hoping this latest system restore does the trick. If I lose all my files, I will be in dip shit. Not to mention bothering you guys way more.

16. No clue. I know that everytime it comes up as an infected file
on Spybot or Malware, I delete it, but it makes no difference.

My IT guy thinks we may need a whole system restore and I'm freaking. I haven't backed up my computer since November and there is an absolute shitload of stuff on there I can't afford to lose.

19. If I were in your position, I'd get an external drive and copy over to it my own critical workfiles
Then I'd disconnect the drive, reinstall everything, including at least one good anti-virus and a firewall, get the system pretty much as I wanted it, setting restore points along the way. Then I'd reconnect the external drive and run the anti-virus against pieces of it. As pieces passed, I'd copy them over, setting restore points as I did this. See what your IT guy says about trying to set aside what files you can in order to try to recover them after a system restore. If you don't want to spring for a new external drive, put stuff on floppies or flash-drives. Depending on what the infection is, you may to be sure that your back-up media is not bootable, to avoid the possibility that the infection lives in the boot sector

I'm paranoid as crap about this stuff: I used windows machines regularly for a decade and picked up two or three viruses in that time; at the end, I was running a firewall, an antivirus, and using spybot once or twice a day. I now have a mac, which I run with a firewall and an anti-virus, and several standard locations on my machine are scanned regularly with a second anti-virus; I do what I can to limit attacks, and I still catch some intrusion like a portscan once every few months. I also do multiple (different) back-ups regularly

15. I just fought a trojan virus on one of my computers at home about 2 months ago.
It was a Vundo trojan variant. It started by showing a small "x" in a red circle in the system tray and telling you that you had a virus and to download "their" fix. I didn't. But to get rid if it I tried to fire up Spybot S&D and it wouldn't even start. I had to rename the .exe to something else to get it to run. I also ran MalwareBytes and Combofix. Those all removed everything but a single registry entry that kept re-spawning the virus. I was pulling my hair out trying to get rid of that one registry key. I tried to login as Administrator to delete the registry key manually and it told me that access was restricted and it couldn't delete it. The trick that the virus writers used was to create the registry key as a certain user then delete the user. I ended up changing the permission on the registry key (as the Administrator) then it deleted just fine. That ended my little nightmare. Good luck to you.

or you can just reset back to your last http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_Restore">restore point.
