Bizarre list of top 25 conservative films - Brazil, Ghostbusters? |
|
Edited on Sat Feb-21-09 10:33 AM by NewJeffCT
Now, I can see "Red Dawn" and several of the others, but Brazil is about as anti-RW as you can get, I thought? Isn't it a parody of big brother fascism? I haven't seen the movie since the 80s, but that is what I recall? Is my memory that bad? http://www.comcast.net/slideshow/entertainment-conservativefilms/25/

by a band of raggedy peasants. Same with Braveheart...

also, I believe Tolkien was very conservative, but his beliefs were so conservative, that they were later considered more liberal, which was why LotR was so popular in the 60s and 70s with the left of center crowd

36. He was more libertarian ... |
|
Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 10:52 PM by RoyGBiv
He was *that* kind of conservative, and he bent toward anarchy in his latter days.
"My political opinions lean more and more to Anarchy (philosophically understood, meaning abolition of control, not whiskered men with bombs) - or to `unconstitutional' monarchy." -- JRR Tolkien.
Many people misread, especially, LotR as various forms of an allegory. As he himself said, this is dangerous and will compel the reader to completely miss the point. The stories are so vast and deep that one can take away from it pretty much anything one wants to. For example, Marxists have used The Hobbit as an allegory that favors Marxism. Others Marxists and socialists have claimed Tolkien's representation of the English countryside shows him to be a fascist.
Generally speaking, in my view, when two groups so totally polar opposites both claim an individual as their ideological partner, I become quite certain they are both wrong.
In any case, Conservatives like Tolkien because one can find conservative (little "c") thought in it. He was a devout Roman Catholic, after all.

are Christian parables. Even though that was NOT evident in the movie. I wonder how many of these movies the person who put this together actually SAW. For one thing Team America, poked a lot of fun at conservatives.

They just assume that if it's Christian, it must be conservative. No matter how much it isn't, and no matter how much in the history of Christianity is actual liberal.
As to the "good vs. evil" thing you mention, I think you are correct on that one, too. Sadly, the conservatives are too fucking dumb to realize that in the majority of the movies it is THEY who are the side of evil.

write the NRO an email explaining that as a freelancer in the film industry, I've worked with a great many of the people responsible for these films and 20 of the 25 films they've listed are directly criticisms of conservatism.
Brazil is the funniest one of all as Gilliam's criticism is not of a liberal state but Reaganism carried to an absurdist extreme. Likewise, Gattaca is a criticism of the growing eugenic tendencies of the right...their analysis is made funnier by their citation of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World as Huxley was a critic of the growth of conservative values in religion, religion in the state and a mystical humanist. If they actually understood what Huxley wrote or the massive influence his grandfather, Thomas Henry Huxley, the noted English Biologist known as "Darwin's Bulldog", had upon Aldous...well, it'd be amusing to watch them backpedal.

34. Team America is actually extremely anti-Liberal. Big time. |
|
The evil villians are Kim Jong Il and his companions from the Hollywood Left. Sean Penn and Alec Baldwin are out to kill "the flag waving American, a dying breed." Hans Blix and the U.N. are portrayed as delinquint jackasses. Michael Moore is called outright "a giant socialist weasel" and portrayed as a suicide bomber who destroys Mount Rushmore. Yeah it takes some stiff jabs at the Right, but it's mostly cover for Trey Parker and Matt Stone's admittedly conservative views.

They're not conservatives.
I personally view them more as nihilists, but if one must parse down their "art" to some sort of expression of political ideology, it fits pretty well with libertarianism, which is what at least one of them claims he is.

I just knew Forrest Gump would be in there
Where's all the wingnutty favorites like "An American Carol" and Fahrenhype 9/11? Don't tell me that they've been deemed of such low quality that they have been shunned by their own audience?

43. They sure like those war movies. I also noticed a couple of weird things, |
|
Actually it's all weird when it comes from their lips, so I guess I should say particularly weird.
In the comment on "Gattica": "the progressive fantasy of a eugenically correct world" HUH?
"The Dark Knight": They compare the hero Batman to W! A double HUH? HUH? on that one.
Their comment explains why they liked "The Lives of Others," but I'd like to comment that it was a really good movie.
I'm also amused that one of their honorable mentions is "Thank You for Smoking" because I wouldn't expect them to "get" that kind of humor.
