What movies have you seen recently?
I just finished "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly," which I've finally seen after all these years.

Earlier, I watched "Pickup on South Street," ('50s film noir) and before that, "Days of Heaven," which has some of the best cinematography you will ever see:

What about you?

1. I just finished watching Underworld: Evolution about an hour ago.
I was... underwhelmed.

On the flipside though, Kate Beckinsdale almost made me turn completely straight. :P

8. Have you seen any Werner Herzog films?
I figured you have, but I just started getting into him. I've seen "Aguirre" and "Fitzcarraldo," along with "The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser" so far.

I also watched my first Yasujiro Ozu with "Late Spring," which was good.

My next one of his to watch is "Even Dwarfs Started Small," which was one of his first movies. I've heard it has "Eraserhead"-like levels of weirdness.

Actually, I used to intern at a screenwriting agency and read the script for "Lakeview Terrace" (the writer was represented by the agency) a few years before they made the movie. It was weird watching the trailers for it when it came out.

I can't make heads or tails of some of the twists, and apparently neither could the screenwriter.

But the acting is perfect, it saves it.

Check out "Key largo" It's my favorite Bogart film after "Casablanca"

23. "The Searchers" and "Paths of Glory"
I like good westerns and they're hard to come by. For years I've been reading that "The Searchers" (1956) was supposed to be really good and John Wayne's best. I've never been a John Wayne fan, but I finally saw this last week. It was very good. John Wayne returns to his family's house in the middle of fucking nowhere right after the Civil War. Big John's already prejudiced as hell and pissed about losing the war, and then Indians massacre his family and steal his little niece. John rides off in a 5 year pursuit full of adventures and enlightenment. No "Wild Bunch" or "Dances with Wolves", but entertaining and a good looking western with spectacular settings.

The same day I also got Stanley Kubrick's "Paths of Glory" (1957), another one that I always heard about but never saw. Excellent. Very much an anti-war film. Kirk Douglass is a French officer and he butts heads with horribly cynical brass in the trenches of WWI France.

Also got "High Heeled Pantyhose Amateur Beach MILFs 56". Skip it. This franchise has been dead since 44 and downhill since 21.

27. "Paths of Glory" is one of my absolute favorite films.
I once attended a screening with James Harris (the producer) and Joe Turkel (he played Private Arnaud; he was also in "The Shining" and "Blade Runner") in attendance.

"The Searchers" is one I saw a long time ago and didn't like, so I may have to see it again, though I've never been a John Wayne fan at all.

57. The Duchess was brilliant. Great insight into the sad, pathetic mores of
English nobility in the late 1700s. Great acting. Heartbreaking. I'm going to read the book. We should see more of Hayley Atwell and Dominic Cooper in US movies, if they'll agree to star in the trash Hollywood is producing.

Brideshead Revisited. Excellent. Wonderful casting. Look for more from Hayley Atwell.

HArold and Kumar Escapre from GITMO. Funny shit.

67. The Other Boleyn Girl
As a film it's okay. As history? Whoever wrote it ought to be flogged.

79. Coraline 3D. The first movie I've seen in the theater in almost a year. TOTALLY AMAZING.
The story was just so-so, a little odd in places. But the visuals were absolutely astounding and totally worth the price of a movie ticket. Definitely see the 3D version. WOW!

82. I love those movies! I've been seeing a lot of good ones myself
I've seen all four of Tati's Hulot comedies in the last few weeks. Most recently, I saw Playtime, the one for which he built a little city on the edge of Paris called Tativille. It's not rip-roaringly funny, but it is fascinating. Particularly scenes like one set in an apartment building, where each apt. faces the street through giant floor to ceiling, wall to wall plate glass windows. The scene is shot from the street; you hear only traffic noise as you're watching people in four apartments watching (unseen) TVs. Brilliant! But admittedly an acquired taste.

I saw The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Julian Schnabel's film based on Jean-Dominique Bauby's memoir of his recovery from a stroke leaving him "locked in" his own skin, with only his left eye to communicate with the world. Quite well done, the whole thing.

The Science of Sleep, Michel Goudry's surreal exploration of young love between two eccentrics and everything that goes wrong with it. Strange movie, but very worthwhile watching. It sticks with you.

Crazy Love, a documentary about Burt Pugach and Linda Riss, the woman whose face he had disfigured who wound up marrying him. Disturbing. Well done.

83. Fiddler on the Roof
Which I watched on Saturday. I hadn't seen the whole thing and when the song "Sunrise, Sunset" came on during the wedding I got all teary eyed. Silly me. The part were Paul was doing his speech with the red flag and the dragoons came at the group with their sabers drawn I was reminded of the winter scene in "Dr. Z" and wouldn't you know it came on that night on the PBS station. Even though we have the VHS I watched it anyway...no commercials.

87. Taxi Driver, The Graduate, McCabe and Mrs Miller
My daughter had never seen Taxi Driver before and The Graduate came on right afterwards. We were up late on Friday.
McCabe and Mrs Miller is one of my all time favorites. I should just go out and buy it instead of leaving it on the DVR.
