5. The kind I'm not in
I don't know how those guys do it. I toured a WWII sub once (not sure what kind it was - it was anchored in Mobile Bay with the USS Alabama) and while I don't get claustrophobic, I kinda did in there. Add to that being underwater, which I'm not real thrilled about and no thanks!

I'm an infantry kinda gal. :P

18. I was on a WWII era sub in the Philly Navy Yard about 50 years ago.
and you would never get me on one again, especially one that was going out to sea.

I was in the Army, where if someone is shooting at you you can do a sensible thing like run away or hide in a hole, neither of which you can do on a submarine.

I'm also not comfortable with that underwater thing.

31. I've often thought that it must have taken a certain breed of insanity
I've often thought that it must have taken a certain breed of courage born from insanity to serve on the old WW2 subs.

I'm certainly not saying I would have done any better in a tank, or a bomber, or dug in on the line, but I seriously think I would have peed myself to sleep every night had I been canned up like a mackerel, 100 feet below sea level, thinking that every creak, groan or pop was the end of the line.

I shudder at the thought of what those guys went through...

19. No favorite submarine, but
I've only been on one submarine, and that was the USS Cobra. A tour. The submarine is extremely small. I can't imagine a bunch of men living in there for any length of time.

23. Skipjack Class. I remember those the best.
I spent many a summer in Connecticut on Long Island Sound in the 60's, and had relatives that worked at the Electric Boat works. I remember watching the boats glide down the Thames and out into the Sound.

But the only boat I was ever on was the USS Cod anchored in Cleveland.
