2. I'll let someone else nominate Wesley Crusher |

and nominate Keiko...mainly because I didn't her cutesy name...save it for the whales! It also seemed like she was mainly just trotted out from time to time to nag at O'Brien about forgetting to stop off at the store and pick up some milk on the way home after work, or some other sort of "domestic strife" silliness...

I didn't really get into DS9 but can see Worf going in that direction (did his son appear on that show? Remember TNG when they dressed up as cowboys on the holodeck and visited "The Ancient West"?
And yes, Rosalind Chao was hot, but so was Ashley Judd, and she was kinda annoying too...Anyone who'd be Wesley's girlfriend would be!

Worf was better developed on DS9 - most characters were. IIRC, Alexander showed up once or twice, but as a teenager with real issues.
The holodeck cowboy episode annoyed me - I kept wanting Yul Brynner (Westworld) to show up... :)

It's certainly much worse than any Season 1 or Season 2 episode because they were still getting their shit together. By the time Fistful aired, they really should have known better.

is that it had a ship named Biko.
Naming worsts is treacherous territory, because we tend to lock out the truly bad, but another worst episode that comes to mind is Troi falling for that negotiator...

I have to confess that I would never in a million years have gotten the Biko reference--good spotting!
One other near-cool thing about A Fistful of Datas is the way they refer to the "ancient" west the same way we refer to "ancient" Greece or Persia. Although the American "wild west" is only a few centuries prior to the TNG timeline, the fact that they refer to it as "ancient" suggests that they're describing not simply a span of time but also the scope of events between the TNG present and its "ancient" past.
It's a clever (and possibly unintentional) glimpse of how a future society categorizes its history, especially considering how much broader that history would be, as compared to ours.

66. Given the rest of that episode, I'd be surprised if the "ancient" was any more than |
|
a missed opportunity, a feeble attempt at being cute that inadvertently hinted at something thoughtful. That's always been my problem with TNG: so many episodes skirted near deep interesting topics but stuck with the surface tale - and I'm not sure the writers even recognized that there was underlying potential in the script...

Any episode centered around anyone with one of those names was guaranteed to suck.
It's a strange conundrum, however, that if Wesley wasn't such a thorough irritant, we could not have had the glory that was him getting skewered with a bayonet by that weird French monkey-soldier...

(Season 7; she's turned into a fish that Worf uses as makeshift sushi and Barclay turns into a hyperactive spider. Well handled and directed and works without being OTT...)
I'm going to have to re-watch season 2 again; my mind draws a blank. It wasn't "Samaritan Snare" (an overall good story despite a couple plot points, which includes the usually dingy Troi)...

Saw an interview with Wil Wheaton once and was surprised that he seemed like a real nice guy. But the character he played was a douchebag of the first order.
Picking a few points
Keiko is a perfectly ordinary Japanese women's name. I even met a Keiko once.
And don't be dissin' Data. He was the first character on TV to show people what we Asperger's oddballs are like, though inadvertently. :)
And Q simply ruled.

26. Actually, Spock was the first... but you're right, re: Data |
|
At the time, people thought I was imitating Data. Uh, I got there 15 years before TNG started, so there. :P :D
Data is one of my favorite characters. He and Geordi made a great double-act too. He stole the show in "Generations" with the emotion chip, but after that movie continuity regarding the chip went haywire...
Obviously I loved Q. He seems to be a parody of Doctor Who (even in "Q Who?" (1989) he has a line of dialogue that rips off the Doctor's phrase from that episode of WHO entitled "Paradise Towers" (1987).) A great parody, nonetheless. A bit blunt at times with a sardonic sense of sarcastic humor, he did put the self-righteous Picard in his place once or twice; which in turn helped round Picard's character. Pity Picard later got assimilated by the Borg, but nobody's perfect...
Wil Wheaton seems cool overall; and in the late 80s, having the save-all nerd dork was the norm. But, like Troi, Wesley Crusher helped make the command crew of the Federation Flagship come across like a bunch of dunderheads for the first year or two... Still, there's a season 1 episode where Beverly puts him out with a sedative and Picard, finding out what she did, retorted that he should be awake to face death like everyone else. For season 1, that scene was a high point and not because of an anti-Wesley stance...

37. Q is hands-down my favorite character in the series. |
|
I always laughed when the episode previews would say somethiing like, "Next week, the eeeevil Q is back...!" - because it was clear to me from the start that he wasn't "evil," just had a whole different outlook than the Federation's rather narrow viewpoint. Though he may have toyed with and tormented the crew, he was provoking them to grow beyond their limitations. And in the end, he and Picard learned a lot from each other.
One of my favorite Star Trek novels showed him as the older brother to Trelane from TOS. One must admit, the family resemblance is pretty unmistakable.
I met the actor once. In person, he is very much like Q. Highly entertaining on TV; not so terribly agreeable in person. None the less, it was a cool experience.

"and that's the best kind of correct!" - The Number One Bureaucrat
When the local independent was stripping ST-TOS every night at 6 back in the early 1970s I watched every night and was amazed to see, for the first time in my life, someone I could identify with and who acted/behaved/thought the way I did. It was a revelation.
But Data was deeper. Spock was perfectly content to embrace his Vulcan heritage in full. Data strove to be more human, sometimes succeeding, sometimes failing, like we Aspies do. The single most touching thing I've ever seen on any television show was the ending of the TNG where Data created a daughter. Guaranteed complete blubbering breakdown every time I see it.

Most of my favorite moments in and Trek were the few times when we had a glimmer of true scientific uncertainty and curiousity, and Pulaski accounted for a lot of those. |
Her speciesistic "human is best" arrogance and her contempt for Data because he was an android turned me off completely. Not to mention I'd never have wanted to be the patient of a doctor with her manner.
I think the producers were somewhat trying to duplicate the McCoy vs. Spock dynamic with Pulaski vs. Data, but it didn't work - because while Spock could handily hold his own, Data was a "child" in many respects, and so his "opponent" just came across as a bully. Furthermore, McCoy had a certain irascible charm, which Pulaski, IMO, utterly lacked.

57. Those are very valid points. I tended to look at her views on Data as |
|
addressing the really interesting question of what is sentience/humanity, which was pretty much ignored in Trek (except for that one episode with the trial). We were clearly intended to accept Data as 'human', so Pulaski's intransigence came off as cruelty, but it could have been so much more.
You're 100% correct with the Spock/McCoy parallel, however, and they should have realized that that was irreproducible...

Fans had a backlash at the time because she was "the McCoy ripoff(tm)". Then came Bashir and, more poignantly, the hologram and that little rat dropping critter from that pointless prequel series...
Crusher had her moments of acting like a doctor/scientist ("True Q", season 6) but more often did the buzzer thing routine and, apart from Troi, was the most boring character. Not "underutilized", but actually "boring". Mind you, in the same story ("True Q"), Q turns her into a barking dog, so maybe she wasn't so boring after all...

OMG when she kept calling him Daa-tuh instead of Day-tuh I about wanted to scream! So when Data confronted her about the pronunciation, it was one of the best moments in the entire series!
Pulaski: what's the difference? Data: one is my name; the other is not.

Also, I loved Dwight Schultz in the A-Team but can barely watch him as Barkley(?) in TNG. I see where they're going with the character but those are a few really, really painful episodes.

|
even in the far future.
Let's see, the Ferengi are ugly inside and out, morally bankrupt, believe in laissez-faire capitalism, outright thievery, deception and worship greed. Yup, there are Republicans in space.

The most annoying character on ST:TNG was Alexander Roshenko.
Anyone who says otherwise has never seen an episode of the series.

He must have got beat up a lot before he went off to Starfleet Academy. By girls. :hide:

51. How is Wesley Crusher not the overwhelming consensus? |
|
I also agree with whoever said Dr. Pulaski. Thank God Dr. Crusher came back in the 3rd season. I liked her; her whiny stereotypical child prodigy, not so much.
Worf's kid was annoying, too, but as he wasn't inflicted on us nearly as frequently as Wesley, it's Wes for the win.

I usually think of ST:TNG as Star Trek: The Silly Generation. I thought the whole series was terrible. I liked Deep Space Nine and Enterprise a lot more.

When the shows were new, my friend and I had a pool going, hoping for the day he'd be killed off.
Alexander Roshenko was a close second.

watch it from beginning to end.Q was always good news.

The way he overacts when he goes into his explanations if what would happen if he did this or that or how they can get out of this or that is Shatneresque.
Wesley is an obnoxious little pissant, though, and a worthy second choice.
Third place goes to Barclay.
