And a lot of really significant contributors to film died this year.

They better not have dropped that segment. It's important.

17. I think he was in the right.
It doesn't do any of the songs justice to do these little snippety things. Some of the previous Oscar ceremonies have scattered the songs in their entirety throughout the show. It helps people who haven't heard the songs before get a better grasp of what's out there and make their own decisions about who should have won.

54. This is a HARD year for actor.
You've got Langella, who is one of the lions of the art; you've got Penn, who's, well, Sean Penn (and this was by far the best thing he's done IMO); you've got Rourke, who showed he's still got what he had (although as Tony Danza pointed out there are a lot of people kissing him this year who would have spit on him last year) -- how do you decide? They were all incredible.

Who were the other two? (I'm not being an ass. I honestly don't remember.)

196. This LOTR nerd says
ROTK, theater edition, had some crappy-ass editing. WTF, PJ cuts out the whole interaction of Eowyn and Faramir in the Houses of Healing for some lingering endless CGI bullshit of Orlando Bloom on a giant elephant? We know you love your monsters, PJ, but this story is about characters, thank you very much. Don't turn into George Lucas on us, kthxbai.

The Extended Edition, collectively, all 12 hours of it, deserves truckloads of Oscars because they did an amazing job of the impossible. But yeah, theater-version wise, ROTK was the weakest of the three (and this is coming from someone who loves the TT movie, except for the fucking endless Helm's Deep battle, which I fast-forward every time until we get to Bernard Hill reciting Tolkien's poetry.)

What I can't forgive is Sir Ian McKellen getting shafted.

Even though he should have won two years before for 'Gods and Monsters,' and I was hoping for him to get his make-up Oscar WHICH HE IS STILL OWED.

He was Gandalf, and that is not, in fact, an easy role. :(

50. it's because there are some movies who will NEVER be nominated for Best Picture
no matter how great the acting and directing was, (a la the Dark Knight, Iron Man, WALL-E) just because they don't fit the typical Oscar "model" so at least let those movies get the minor awards, give them their due for being great.

and invested them in the Oscar Pimping Fund.

Seriously. Academy Awards are pursued incredibly aggressively. Sometimes it's about who ran the best campaign to convince people to vote, not about what's really the most incredibly artistic/whatever criteria film out there. It's like running for class president with a zillion-dollar budget, in some ways.

109. Some people complain for damned good reasons.
Dignity is not only a province of the normally-abled. My older sister is disabled, in a wheelchair, and she thinks Lewis is an insulting prig who contributes to the view of the disabled as childish and incapable people who should be pitied and coddled like babies for their whole lives, and never treated as equals in our society. But yay for money, 'cause that's all that matters, right? Not actual equality or anything. And that doesn't even get INTO Lewis' gay hate and misogyny.

Some info on what people within the disabled community think of Lewis:

http://julian1st.wordpress.com/2009/02/04/jerry-lewisprotests-controversy-over-humanitarian-award-pickets-at-oscar-ceremonies/

“Regarding your blog about Jerry Lewis’ receiving the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, you and your readers should know that many of us object to it. He frequently calls people with disabilities, whom he supposedly helps, “cripples”. He refers to gay men as “fags” and has said that women are nothing more than baby-making machines. Moreover, his annual telethon exploits kids with disabilities to garner pity as a fundraising tool, despite the constant entreaties of the disability community to stop the pity campaign. It does more harm than good. But Lewis and his organization have refused to work with our community. Instead, Lewis has threatened to have his critics killed. Lewis is no humanitarian and does not deserve this prize. It is an insult to people with disabilities, the gay rights movement and the memory of Jean Hersholt.”

Your shitty tone was unappreciated. This is a REAL issue within the community of the disabled, whether YOU accept it or not.

77. That he is contributing to stereotypes that prevent such things.
I'm not denying that he's raised a lot of money for research. I'm glad somebody's doing it. I just don't agree with the way he goes about it, because it doesn't help disabled people, who have the lowest employment rate in the country, by promoting the stereotype that disabled people are helpless and incompetent.

He also has a reputation for treating his crew, hotel staff, and so on like crap.

This, however, is a discussion for another forum and probably another time. Let's watch the Oscars. :hi:

Enjoyed the Bollywood dancing. There's some inexplicable joy in the energy and the precision of the movement.

I'm beginning to wonder if it's not something geopolitical with India.

They just gave away the typical "runner-up" Best Picture Award, Best Director, to Slumdog.

The only thing, in my mind, that can save the night now and give some people who deserve it their due is if Milk wins Best Picture and Rourke wins Best Actor.

they made the Peter Gabriel song that was nominated sound just like the 2 Slumdog Millionaire numbers. They used the same drum players, very little change in the two other SDM numbers. I don't get why Bruce Springsteen's 'Wrestler' song wasn't at least nominated? And why can 2 songs from the same movie be nominated for Best Song? Seems like one song per movie should be the norm.

didn't even utilize some of the best numbers available from musicals.

And like you say, they don't translate to television - reminds me of the movie "A Chorus Line" *shudder*

eta: Jackman wants the musical to return (as if it ever left) so that he can make more - the action films can be very trying on the body.

at the Screen Actors Guild. After it won that, I really thought it had a chance here at the Oscars. I think no one in particular stood out enough to get a Oscar nomination, though maybe Dev Patel had a chance. I love the film but think its strength was the whole group of actors, young and older.

Since he died just before the Oscars in 2008.

195. No Anita Page?
She was the last living attendee of the first Oscars and shared top billing in "The Broadway Melody," the second film to win Best Picture.
She was leading lady to Clark Gable, Lon Chaney and Buster Keaton.

God, I hate the Academy! History is lost on them.

They should make sure they're not sitting behind anyone nominated at the least. It was bad enough that Sarah Jessica Parker was sitting behind Marrissa Tormei but they actually put her on stage. What were they thinking!?
