I like Sean Penn, but I think he really blew it in his acceptance speech.
At no point did he acknowledge his wife and partner, the beautiful Robin Wright. He had a note, he'd written down names and mentioned many, but hers wasn't on it and the absence was noticeable, at least to me. Bad form, Sean.

I personally thought that was tacky and insensitive...even though I think he's incredibly talented as an actor.

My two cents.

1. They filed for divorce a while back so who knows what's going on there.
She looked pretty happy when he won.

3. Yeah, I'd heard that, too. They seem to have a tumultous relationship.
She filed, they separated, but then they got back together. Same ole, same ole....

but did you notice how SHE grabbed him for a kiss as he was heading up to the stage? It wasn't the other way around.

Yes, she seemed happy for him and maybe he was just all caught up in his own thing to be conscious of her....but still, it seemed weird that he had the list and she wasn't on it.

Whatever. It's their drama. I can imagine her feelings might have been a bit hurt, though.

10. I noticed
that he started to motion toward her and stopped himself, as though she had to kiss him because he wasn't sure he was allowed.

5. Excellent point.
in all fairness, maybe he was so overwhelmed he couldn't think straight.....

...but still, he'd actually written some notes, so you'd assume he'd be a bit more thoughtful and organized in his acknowledgments.

Oh well.

6. Just like when Julia Roberts failed to mention Erin Brokovich
during her onstage acceptance speech, and only corrected that when a reporter mentioned it to her in the backstage speech area. At least Hillary Swank had the wherewithal Brandon Teena/Teena Brandon onstage.

8. As an aside, I thought it was really classy when Danny Boyle
acknowledged his mistake in leaving out the credit for the choreographer for the last production piece in Slumdog. He made sure to say the guy's name and called himself "an idiot" .

In all fairness, they're in front of millions and probably really nervous.

Milk would have said that Penn had done well.

18. I, on the other hand, stood and cheered, and I didn't even want him to win.
I wasn't even watching the show, I just flipped it on as I walked past the TV and caught his speech. When he criticized the Prop 8 supporters, I cheered. Nothing he left out overshadows what he put it.

His speech was great.

What exactly did Robin Wright Penn do for him in this role, and what does she have to do with Harvey Milk, Prop 8, or his oscar?
