Speaking of the Potomac, why do people say "Potomac River"? Potomac means river. |

It's like saying River River.
Always wondered about this.

Although I suppose its ironic that one of the main roads that runs through Potomac, Maryland is River Road..:)

Everybody around here calls it Lake Mille Lacs. "Lake One Thousand Lakes" for the literal-minded. :)

River Avon (Afon) = River River
Mount (something) Shan for any mountain in China or Taiwan. e.g. Mt. Alishan.
Or Mississippi River = Big river River?
