Speaking of the Potomac, why do people say "Potomac River"? Potomac means river.

Speaking of the Potomac, why do people say "Potomac River"? Potomac means river.
It's like saying River River.

Always wondered about this.

calls it the Potomac. It's very rare that anyone tacks on the river part.

3. Most people who do it are distinguishing the River from the city
of Potomac Maryland, I think...

Although I suppose its ironic that one of the main roads that runs through Potomac, Maryland is River Road..:)

Lacs in French means lake. It's like calling it Mille Lake Lake.

10. The only people who call it Mille Lacs Lake are from out of state
Everybody around here calls it Lake Mille Lacs. "Lake One Thousand Lakes" for the literal-minded. :)

River Avon (Afon) = River River

Mount (something) Shan for any mountain in China or Taiwan. e.g. Mt. Alishan.

Or Mississippi River = Big river River?

and on a barely related note, I have a postcard of Wagon Mound NM, which the card says was named for its "moundlike" appearance...Wouldn't that make it "Mound mound"?
