Happy Paczki Day!
I have already had my 5000 calorie, deep fried, fat-laden treat for the day....

1. Same to you!
Although I don't think anyone more than 50 miles of Hamtramck know what it is.

6. Bavarian
It was a tough choice between that and the lemon.

5. I'm about 200 miles outside of there
Do I get a treat for knowing what one is? Although to be honest they are waaaaaaaaaaaay too sweet for me.

7. Well, I would've given you paczki but you say they're too sweet
Plus there is the added bonus of them sitting in your stomach like a lump of lead all day.

9. Yes!
I don't make the cheese pierogies. I make potato and onion, sauteed with more onion and butter. God, they're fattening - but soooooo good.

My Babci made them the best - she spent hours in the kitchen, yelling at my mother. I had no idea what she was saying (since it was all in Polish) - but it was fun as hell to watch my mom get yelled at, for a change.

10. Oh, yes, they have to be potato
One of my college roommates was Ukranian and her parents owned a Ukranian funeral home in Hamtramck. Ukranian food is very similar to Polish; her parents would bring all the leftovers from the funeral luncheons up to us starving college students and that's where this Irish girl developed my taste for pierogies. They have a different name in Ukranian that sounds like peddeh-heh but the taste is the same. Yum!

I remember those mother-grandmother kitchen 'discussions.' Now I have them with my mother. In fact, I threw her out of my kitchen one Easter morning for her running commentary on how I brown pork sausage differently than she does.

Enjoy your pierogies for tomorrow we fast...

13. OMG! ROFL!!!!
Okay, then, I have to ask you this....

These "discussions" that they would have.....was it a whole lot more yelling than talking? Good lord, my mom swore to me that they weren't fighting, but just "talking loudly".....but I would have put money down that it was an all-out brawl during those cooking extravaganzas.

17. It sure seemed like yelling to me
Now the tradition is mostly carried on by my mother and sister who believes nobody can cook except her and has quite a lot to say about how other people arrange their kitchens. Clearly not to suit her.

12. Yes, Happy P-Day!
I had to walk past a big display of Paczkis going to work. And drove past a bakery that had a line out the door, at 5:30am.

I've had Paczkis in the past, but not this year. I'm trying to eat healthy(er), and have blown my "senseless calorie limit" on Girl Scout cookies.

:hi:

22. I'm not sure
Does Milwaukee have any Polish bakeries? Basically, it's a deep fat fried jelly donut made with lard.

Paczki is big in Detroit and Pittsburgh, I believe. And maybe Buffalo?

24. There are some listed here
http://www.onmilwaukee.com/market/articles/ethnicgrocery.html

This place maybe:

A.J.'s Polish Deli
1215 W. Lincoln Ave., (414) 643-7733
A.J.'s is the only exclusively Polish grocery in the city specializing in Polish pastries, perogies and breads.

Or they mention a Bellas as a place to get Polish pastries.
