I'm Having Dish Network Installed At My Home On Monday
Edited on Sat Mar-06-04 09:31 PM by arwalden
Goodbye Comcast!!! (Except for my internet... I'll keep that.)

I signed up for the local channels and every channel they had to offer (except for the sports extras, Latino extras, Playboy extras, etc) and it's going to cost less than cable. And I'll have MORE channels that I'll actually like.

Whoo hoo! Can't wait!

7. I agree.
The music channels are among the best things about it. Especially since radio in this town sucks.

3. Looks Like We'll Have A Clear Path To The Satellite...
... and our neighbors love theirs, so I'm hopeful that ours will work well to. (Sorry you're having trouble. I hope it improves.)

5. Eventually... whenever we're "forced" to do it.
But I'm happy with the TVs we have now. I'd like to keep them as long as possible.

The service I signed up for was the standard non-hdtv one. I guess I'll upgrade at the last possible moment... but until then I'll just lope alone with my NTSC rear-projection TV.

I'm just outside of DC... so I guess we're not too far north to lose too much of the signal.

10. comcast might raise your dsl rate
i recently was shopping for a DSL provider ...

I have DirecTV so i'm not a comcast cable subscriber ... comcast told me DSL would cost over $60 / month unless I became a cable subscriber ... then it would cost $42.95 / month ...

Verizon is only charging me $29.95 / month for DSL ...

be careful ... comcast might raise your monthly DSL rate when you cancel your cable ...

21. Yes... this is true. However...
I can keep basic-basic (no-converter) cable service at under $10 per month which qualifies me for the >$10 per month "discount" on their cable modem internet service.

It sucks to have to play that game just to save $5 a month... but that's a total of $60 a year (+/-) and compared to dialup internet service, it's something that I'm willing to live with.

What I'm NOT spending on cigarettes each month MORE than covers the cost of cable TV, satellite TV, and cable Internet.

a lot of channels from their line-up, including Comedy Central and the music channels, right?

14. EchoStar (DishNetwork) Preparing to Drop Viacom Channels:
EchoStar Preparing to Drop Viacom Channels: EchoStar Communications' DISH Network satellite service will stop carrying signals from CBS's 15 owned-and-operated television stations at midnight Monday if the satellite company and CBS parent Viacom can't resolve a legal dispute over retransmission fees and the networks EchoStar must carry.

The deadline stems from a restraining order imposed by a federal judge that was set to expire March 8, after which EchoStar must cease airing those 15 O&Os if the two companies have not reached a settlement. Local affiliates not owned by Viacom are not affected.

At issue is the rate EchoStar must pay Viacom to retransmit CBS and which cable networks the satellite operator must carry. Specifically, EchoStar officials are balking at Viacom's demand that in order to carry CBS it must also carry the Nickelodeon GAS channel. EchoStar filed an antitrust suit against Viacom to challenge the media giant's demands.

If no agreement can be reached by the deadline, all of the Viacom networks carried by EchoStar would go dark. In addition to top-rated CBS, the networks affected include MTV, VH1, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon.

15. Been with Dish about 3 Years
and have not had big problems. I was with big-dish Turner Vision for several years, then they dropped Bravo and others and said these outlets were all "going small dish" and Turner had an association with Dish. Since DirecTV is MURDOCH owned, I have taken my puny boycott satisfaction in being "Dish". Plus that Dish carries Free Speech TV and World Link.

That said, there are some downsides. Two general ones are that the signal goes out in stormy weather and it's not possible to go a-la-carte------I have NEVER seen MTV, the Disney channels or kids' channels, the sports channels, and lots of others I'm forced to have in a package. The one time there WAS a technical problem, the phone Disher rapidly fell back on a "buy a new receiver"; a local service call did the trick instead. Plus, Dish has raised the rates each year. Plus DirecT carries the local channels and PBS in my area; Dish doesn't. Plus, since all the news networks are important to me, in order just to get Faux I have to go with a higher package. The irony that detestable Faux is at the bottom of my decision.

If Kef's information about Dish dropping the Comedy Channel pans out, THAT TEARS IT, it's a deal breaker. Unfortunately, I'm tied for a year.

to call the DISH network in support of keeping them on, so I'd say it's true.

22. The Same Scrolling Text Appears On TV-Land
I'd be disapppointed to see TV-Land disappear... but that's not a deal breaker for me. I really don't care about MTV or VH1 (at all!)... Nick@Nite is a rare choice for me. I'd miss the Daily Show, but the other bonuses would make it a worthwhile trade.

24. I Was Looking into Dish
A few weeks ago. Until they get TrioTV, NWI, and a more attractive program scale or a la carte, I won't be switching from DirectTV, as much as I'd like to stick it to Rupert.
