I am depressed.
I have a job, but I can't afford to pay for health insurance or my meds. The job pays too much for me to qualify for heat assistance, but not enough for me to keep up with the bill.

When I have a migraine I have to go to work anyway. I can't afford to take time off or buy my meds.

If I had no job I might be able to get health care or help with the heat bill. If I had a decent job I could pay for what I need. Having a low paying job that sucks the life out of me and offers no benefits is the worst. Its hard to look for a job when you're working and there's not much out there anyway.

5. Have you tried to get free samples, undeterred?
When I was without insurance, my head doctor gave me free samples for the most expensive medication that I take. It didn't cover the whole month, but it covered a big chunk of it and greatly reduced the cost of my medication.

8. Bingo. Sales reps hand out free samples of lots of meds. If your MD won't
Edited on Wed Feb-25-09 04:57 PM by mnhtnbb
give you free samples, do you know anyone who works in health care? Any RN's? Any friends who
are MD's? Anybody who could get you samples?

And here's a hug. Lots of us have worked lousy jobs waiting for something better to materialize.
Do hang in there.

6. Check with your state Dept of Health Services
I'm not 100% certain, but Wisconsin may offer affordable health coverage to you on a sliding scale, based on your income and health history. Many states offer plans like this and you may qualify, especially if you have a pre-existing condition like migraines or depression.

9. I make too much money to qualify for health coverage
offered by the state, too much money to qualify for programs offered by the drug companies (which I have gotten in the past) and too much money to qualify for assistance with the $900 heat bill. But I don't make enough money to pay my bills and buy my meds. There is a gap and I am in it.

7. Try calling the company that manufactures the meds
Sometimes they will either give them to you at no cost or a reduced cost. They do it for PR purposes, of course, but it can still help. Just tell them what you told us and see if they will do anything.

10. I hear that. *hugs* Hubby has to watch that we don't make too much money or
we would screw ourselves out of med coverage.

It's a really messed up "system" that we've got going here!

11. Oh damn.
:(

I'm so sorry. You're up against a wall and I wish I could offer more than just sympathy, to you and a dozen other DUers in situations that are just as bad.

We all desperately need an economic turn-around to happen soon. I wish our government was doing more than just shoveling money into the pockets of bank executives.

12. Next time you are able to see a physician...
talk to them honestly. Tell them you simply cannot afford the medication. See if they know of a way to help you... or someone who can help you.

I hope you find a better job soon. And, I hope your migraines stay at bay somehow.

13. I went home from work early the other day
because I could only make it 7.5 hours with a migraine, not 8. Spent my days off sleeping to try and get rid of the headache. The job sucks the life out of me and offers no benefits.
