Is Limewire starting to suck or what? |
|
It's real inconsistent. Sometimes it's return a bunch of tunes. Then, 10 minutes, nothing but spam. What's the deal?

21. I did a search earlier |

For the same group using both search engines. They turned up the same tunes. Or should I say, nothing. So how is it better exactly?

4. The only thing I can do with limewire is browse through peoples personal photos. |
|
If you type in resume.doc or something similar you see a lot of people that put their entire hard drive in their shared folder. Its good for a laugh every now and then.

...I'm reasonably Internet-savvy and computer literate but never "got" the whole mIRC thing.

15. It seems a lot more complicated than it is. |

I have a tutorial I wrote a few years ago around here somewhere. I'll see if I can find it. It's worth it.

Go to www.mirc.com and download mirc32.exe
Install it.
ok after you unzip there will be a file called readme along with the major components of mIRC. open that and read it first.
Load it up. Fill out the info with false shit. Or real shit if you don't care about having your name on the net.
ok the connect box should already be up. Go to the top of it and open the dropdown box and select UNDERNET. You MUST be on the undernet or you will not reach the channel.
If the connect box is NOT up you can reach it manually by going to the second icon at the top of mIRC (Options).
Once you reach Undernet you will have to join a channel. If, when you do get connected to undernet, a box pops up asking if you want to join a channel. Enter #mp3passion. Otherwise go to the "Status" window within mIRC and type on the command line /j #mp3passion
HOORAY! You made it. If not, go back and carefully re-read the above instructions.
Ok anyone who is serving files in a channel will have either an @ or a + before their nick.
To get their list you would type @"nick". To get mine, for example, you would type @}RIPPER{. At this point you will receive a prompt asking if you want to accept a file. Say yes, of course. The list will download into your C\mirc\download folder. (or whatever drive letter you are using) Double click it to open it. You can go through the list looking for things you might want. To request a particular song you would type !nick song.mp3 for example.. !}RIPPER{ Slayer - Chemical Warfare - Ghosts of War (Combo Edit).mp3. It's important that there be no spaces before the ! and that the extension .mp3 (or whatever type of file you are getting) is included. (Note to those that do not understand cut and paste: When you have the list open you simply left-click and hold it as you drag across the line {song} you want. After it is highlighted right click and select copy. Now go back to the mIRC screen and on the command line, IN the channel, you right click and select paste. Very simple.) You would just paste that right on to the command line in the channel, and press enter. If there is no one ahead of you in line you will begin to receive the file immediately. (Same box will popup to ask if you want to receive, We'll deal with that pest later.) If all the server's slots are full you will be placed in que. Most servers are high speed and have at least 5 sending slots open so any wait you have will be short. (Depending on the person. Heh.) Just repeat the process as often as you like. If you are on 56k it's probably best to get no more than 2 songs at a time because it's more efficient, and most people require you to get at least 500 cps. (I require 2000) The same rules hold for getting videos and other media types.
#Mp3passion is the largest song channel on the undernet with the most variety. If you do a channel search you can find specific genres of music, first run movies, ebooks and just about anything you want.
It's quite easy once you do it a few times.
Have fun.

20. You're welcome. Some additional info. |
|
If you don't want to sort through hundreds of lists you can also just search the channel for specific artists or songs. While in the channel you can type @find Rolling Stones (or whomever) or @find under my thumb (or whatever) and individual servers will show up in private message boxes showing what they have related to your search. This makes it easier to pinpoint specific things.
These message boxes also help you discern who will send the fastest. In addition to listing the tracks you might want they usually display how many slots they have in use, how many they have open and how many people are in que. Most servers will allow you to put several files in que so you can request them and they will be sent in the order they are received.
If you have any further questions please feel free to ask.
