Small tragedy

Our bee hives didn't make it and no, it wasn't CCD (Collapsing Colony Disorder). Thanks to a too long stretch of cold weather, the girls couldn't leave their hives to take a dump. Bees will not poop in the hive and they won't leave it if the temperatures are below mid 40's. So they hold on as long as they can, then let go. There are toxins in their stuff and hey presto, dead bees.

Reports are coming in that this has happened all over New England, probably the Mid West, too. Adding to the problem, start up package bees are becoming gruesomely expensive and more difficult to find.

It ain't easy being a bee nor keeping them.
