4. Can't you still smoke on the platforms?
Last time I used Amtrak you could take smoke-breaks for stops that lasted longer than 10 minutes.

6. I heard they are killer on the knees too.
Edited on Thu Feb-26-09 07:30 PM by Jamastiene
My mother said they made every bone in her body that had been broken before hurt all over again.

I hate trains with an unbridled passion.

I don't like them at all. I don't like seeing them, hearing them, being forced to hear about them in the next town over because they were a big railroad town and they never STFU about trains over there, and I don't like the idea of anyone I like riding in them. Please be safe.

The town next door to us was a big railroad town on the Eastern Seaboard and trains are a big thing around here. I've always had this unrivaled fear and loathing of them. And I don't trust them. There was also a rash of teen suicides by train in this county in the late 90s that horrified me. Let me depressed. I'll probably always hate trains.

11. Trains kick ass
Especially if you spring for a private compartment. Privacy, a chance to stretch out and take a nap, and maybe even have a snog if you're with somebody special.

If time was no object, I'd take a train over air travel any day. It's much more civilized and human.

about 10 years ago, for $100 each, me and four guys traveling on business took the train from Toronto to Montreal in first class. Plenty of room, great view, wonderful food and wine, and most of the trip was along Lake Ontario and the St Lawrence Seaway. Great trip.

I've never thought about them much because they've been ubiquitous in all of my personal landscapes from the place of my birth to El Paso, to North Carolina (Willow Spring) right on back to my birthplace again (Nebraska).

In Nebraska, we worry about these: I showed you these once before. If you remember, PM me :-)

21. What the hell is wrong with Amtrak? Maybe if our government actually
funded it, the service would be first class. Hopefully Obama's new priorities will provide support to our rail system.

I'm sure you are happy to hop into your SUV and chug down I-5.

It's the only way to travel here between DC and Boston.

35. That's the problem.
It takes an hour in a car. Much longer by train, even when they aren't delayed by passing freight.

I don't know if this is true everywhere, but in NorCal Amtrak shares lines with Union Pacific, and the freight trains have priority, so it's not uncommon to have to sit and wait for 20 minutes or more while a freight train passes.

on the highways, when you have the luxury of taking the train.

If you have a wireless card, you could still check into DU while on the train  and make sure you are responding to everyone who has replied to you. No worries about asshole drivers in cars, trucks, and buses. It's one of the safest modes of transportation, and it helps save the environment. Do your part, cboy!!

44. I'm surprised, because it is not that way here in the northeast and midatlantic.
I could go from baltimore to bridgeport, ct in 4.5 hours by train, and it was at least six hours by car. I drove that route more than a few times and hated it every friggin time!

When I worked in NYC, the ONLY way to get into the city was by train. Only repubs and morans drove into the city on a daily basis.

45. The scheduled time from Sacramento to Oakland is just under two hours by train.
And that particular route is notorious for long delays. Even without the current track construction issue- apparently they're shifting some routes off of the train and onto buses to allow for repairs.

Absent unusual traffic it's an hour by car.

37. Yep some N-S Interstates do go east-west.
I-85 between Durham and Greensboro being a perfect point.

But then most of it is attached to I-40 which is east-west. So you have I-40E/I-85N and I-40W/I-85S. And then in places you have crazy roads where you have a US highway going NORTH and a US Highway going South on the same stretch of road.

Bloody road signs.

Dealin' card games with the old men in the club car
Penny a point, ain't no one keepin' score
Pass the paper bag that holds the bottle
Feel the wheels rumble 'neath the floor

And the sons of Pullman porters and the sons of engineers
Ride their fathers' magic carpets made of steel
Mothers with their babes asleep, rockin' to the easy beat
And the rhythm of the rails is all they feel.
