Do they really work, or do they just make noise in the dryer?

3. They do work well.
A few months ago started using a laundry soap recipe here on DU; put some vinegar in the Downy ball (the soap works well, but leaves a bit of a slickness on the clothes). Bought a set of the balls. Saving much $$$, and the laundry is as clean as when I bought the detergent and fabric softener.

5. I just use little lavender sachets from trader joes
They last for about 10 washings and smell really good. A pack of 4 is $3.
