The different larvae are said to taste similar, probably because they have similar wood-eating habits. Edible either raw or lightly cooked in hot ashes, they are sought out as a high-protein food by Indigenous Australians. The raw witchetty grub tastes like almonds and when cooked the skin becomes crisp like roast chicken while the inside becomes light yellow, like a fried egg.<3>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witchetty_grub

10. the pic in your OP is a beetle larvae for sure |

Edited on Fri Feb-27-09 11:42 PM by Kali
the pic in the wiki article are lepidoptera. I will definitely pass. While I have a typical western aversion to entomophagy, I personally have an irrational phobia of caterpillars. Grubs are close behind.:scared: :scared: :scared:

13. I got it from googling witchetty grub but you're right |
|
It definitely has beetle characteristics. The witchetty is supposedly good eating. Les commented that, unlike some grubs that are eaten out of necessity and swallows as quickly as possible, he actually savors the witchetty's peanut-like flavor. :)
The other animal he feasted on was a yabby (Australian crayfish).

looks a little off too. Wiki-ing around (is that a phrase?) I found some reference to a South American longhorn beetle larvae a foot long but no photo. The species mentioned as witchetty were on the order of 6 or 7 centimeters.
edit cause I can't spell
