Got my History midterm grade back
102%!!!

The first half was an essay exam; he gave us a list of key people, events, and concepts, and we had to choose five of them and write a half-page essay about each one, fully identifying it in-context, including relevant names, dates, etc. Each identification was worth ten points. There was also a bonus question worth five points.

The other half was a two-and-a-half page essay response to Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness," in which we were to discuss and examine what the novella says about European imperialism and racism during the time period in which the novel took place. It was something he gave us beforehand, and we had to bring it with us and turn it in before we were permitted to take the second part of the exam.

I got a perfect 50 points on my essay, 47 out of 50 on my identifications, and I got the bonus question right, for a total of 102%.

The five things I chose to identify were:

The Spanish Inquisition
Luther's 95 Theses
Napoleon Bonaparte
Nationalism
The Enlightenment

The bonus question was: Of all of the Catholic sacraments, Martin Luther claimed to find Biblical basis for only two. Which two were they?
(The answer is Baptism and Communion)

I had been stressing over this, and I am SO happy right now.

:woohoo:

4. Oh, it is--and the professor is fantastic.
He's a doctoral student who's *this* close to getting his PhD in History, and he's every bit as devoutly liberal as Rhythm and I are. He has no problem making poignant connections between historical mistakes/blunders and what the Repukes have done in recent history, either. He told the class right from the beginning, "REALITY has a liberal bias. I'm not here to teach pretty fictions that prop up stupid, nationalistic ideas. I'm here to teach reality. If you can't handle it when reality conflicts with your precious ideology, then you might as well drop this class right now."

A couple of people did, too!

6. Trudging through papers at the end of the quarter here (PhD student in History)
One's a methodology paper applying theory to the interpretation of Triumph of the Will the other is a Historiography paper on the debate over the path of German History.

Frankly I live at my laptop :argh: and haven't slept well in a few weeks, :hangover: anyway I'm almost done. Good job, and good luck!

9. This is a class I'm taking to fulfill a GEC credit requirement
as I am an English/Creative Writing major. But still, I'm VERY pleased to have done so well. If I can keep this up, I'll end up with another 4.0 semester under my belt, which is all to the good in terms of scholarship cash and grad school opportunities.

Your work sounds crazy-complicated, but I bet it's interesting. :)

11. Thank you Peggy!
I'm so happy about this. It's the only class I've been worried about, because although the professor kicks ass, he has HIGH standards.

13. It's because of the bonus question.
Since I only "missed" three points and the bonus was worth five, it made up for what I missed and then some.

20. Good thing you were able to take history before the Bushies rewrote it.
Had it been after the rewrite you would probably be a student left behind.
Congratulations
