So I'm turning 18 tomorrow (4/26)...
Edited on Sat Apr-25-09 08:49 PM by TomorrowNeverKnows
And I seriously never thought it would seem like such a short wait; I remember when I was little, this seemed like a looooong way off, like I could never imagine myself as an adult, and now it's just less than a day away. Where did all that time go? Why was it so short?

My mom is teasing me because I'm one of the few people she knows who DOESN'T want to be 18, as must others can't wait.

Although really, for the past almost 2 years, I've gone between dread/despair and total excitement far more times than I can count; the former because of the faster and faster passing time, and a feeling of loss, like a total death of any remaining childhood, having more and more aspects of my life being flipped on their head, uprooted, and changed faster than I can adjust, and that there was a lot of things I still haven't done that I wanted to do before reaching this milestone, such that I feel much older than I actually am. And the latter because this means there's more things I can do my myself and without consent, like voting, (I was pretty mad that I didn't get to vote in the last election) and not needing nearly as much permission for everything.

There were even a few people I sit with at lunch, and one of them keeps pestering me, and I still don't know if jokingly or not, to buy cigarettes for her; even though I vehemently detest and loathe smoking with all my being.

So...at this point I'm really not sure what to feel; excitement or dread, there's reasons to feel either. I've never been a legal adult before, so I guess I'm not sure what to expect. Everybody's saying congrats, but I'm not sure.

13. The difference between today and yesterday
is that you can now sign a contract and be liable for stuff. Be smart about that, and ask qualified people for advice before you make big commitments. Oh, and now you can go to adult jail, so don't do any stupid crap that might get you arrested. ;)

Other than that, today probably feels the same as yesterday, as it should.

Happy birthday!

14. I'm 18...+20...
The only thing I would say is...enjoy the stages you have to go through (which by the sound of it you can understand). Don't try to get ahead of yourself. Making do and getting by is part of the fun on your way to success/adulthood.

15. Happy Birthday TomorrowNeverKnows
And welcome to DU!

:hi: :toast: :bounce:

Know there will be joy, sadness, love, loss, quiet and chaos. You have apprehensions, but they only show me you have an introspective mind. Just remember, the child you fear losing will always be there inside you. There will always be wonders to behold, laughter and silliness, and time to just play. And you'll feel the child smile. Always.

19. Enjoy it.
Sure, you don't know what to expect, but you're not supposed to. And it's not like you can will yourself to be younger, either. Just keep your eyes open, have a plan, and follow it as best you can.

20. Who cares about milestones?
Adults are just children forced to know things, really. You can do the things you still want to do. If anything, you're more empowered to do whatever because you're an adult. Not the other way around. You don't have to act differently just because you're an adult. It just means you have more abilities, and that's that.

22. One thing you can't do much about is the passage of time so
relax and enjoy the ride. You are still a teen, though. No need to become an adult overnight. Enjoy the remainder of your teen years.

I see you have good taste in music. My daughter is a high school sophomore and in world history she has to do a huge presentation on an important historical figure born outside the US who contributed significantly to his time. She's doing her report on George Harrison and her biggest problem is paring down all the info into the essentials! An embarrassment of riches for sure.
