Comfortably Numb is one of the greatest rock songs |
|
Sorry - if you don't like Floyd or anything before 1999...
That guitar solo - does it EVERY time...

2. I always say that solo is genius for what Gilmour DOESN'T play. |
|
It's the "white space" that does it for me.
What all the metal "guitar gods" of the 80s never understood is that playing 10 notes per second isn't what makes you great. What makes you great is knowing when not to play any.
I dunno. Maybe that makes no sense.

6. I think it makes perfect sense. |
|
Most of the guitar gods were just pretentious wankers. Knowing what to leave out (an ego, for starters) is as important as knowing what to add. They want to be stars, Gilmour wanted to be an artist.
Yngwie Malmsteen may be an amazing guitarist talent wise, but his music was just soulless swill, imo.
Of course, as a punk fan I can be easily satisfied with three chords and an "OI!", but I still know what you mean. :)

5. I agree of course, but... |
|
His solo near the end of The Final Cut (the song, rather than the whole album) is very nearly as powerful IMO.

7. Floyd is one of the very few "popular" bands that I feel truly deserve it. |
|
Their music is accessible, yet endlessly creative and experimental. That's a damn hard line to walk (and one that probably couldn't happen these days. Floyd would be lucky to even get signed in this vapid musical climate).

Dogs (Couple of epic solos in that one song. I like the first one, the first half of which begins at right around 1:50. Some real quick pickin' going on there. Only about 35 seconds, but a really nice feel. The second solo, around 5:32, is just plain beautiful. And I've never been able to recreate that thing he does at 6:20. Totally sick. Then at around 13:27, there's another 35 seconds of solo that's basically part two of first solo. Way to tie it up, Dave.)
Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts I-V (Again, a couple of monster solos. He makes that thing cry like a baby. For most of the song, the guitar IS the singer.)
Another Brick In The Wall Part II (Tiny in comparison with the previous two, but everything's in there: sweep picking, quick picking double-stop comps, articulated bends, double bends, and more.)
A couple of quick notes: First, once I learned to "listen fast", I found Yngwie's playing had a lot more soul than people give him credit for. And second, the greatest recorded rock song I've ever heard is Rock Bottom (Live) off of Strangers In The Night.

15. And to boot Shine on you Crazy Diamond is a perfect example of what you "don't " play |
|
Minimalism at its best - no wonder that's Eno's favorite Floyd tune...
