17. I got a big collection as well,
about 125 gigs now, I was just ribbin on you some, :D But about music, favorites from the beginning of my musical life to the present....:)

Jan and Dean, Beach Boys, the Doors, the Richeous Brothers, The Doors, Mama's and Papa's, The Drifters, Sheena Easton(don't ask), Journey, Air Supply, Chicago, Enya, the Go Go's, Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart(again, don't ask), Skid Row, White Lion, White Snake, 2 Live Crew, Metallica, AC/DC, Nirvana, Guns and Roses, Celine Dion, Pink Floyd, the Eagles, Ozzy, Weezer, Bush, REM, Presidents of the United States of America, Oasis(I loved wonderwall) Korn, Tenacious D, Foo Fighters, Huge techno dance faze(think Aqua, to Labouche, Rednex you get the idea), Sarah Mclachlan, Slipknot, Dope, Deftones, Luxt, Linkin Park, Puddle of Mudd, Creed(yes, creed), Life of Agony, Type O Negative, Judas Priest, Michael Schenker Group, The Scorpions, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, ILL Nino, Chevelle, Five Finger Death Punch, Demon Hunter, and lastly...Opeth, The Lonely Island, Coheed and Cambria....

Thats basically my favorites, from about age 7 to the present....there are a ton that I'm missing, but my musical journey has been a weird one, getting/finding old bands that I missed, and coming across good musical guru's that let me listen to older stuff(like finding Priest/Maiden only 9yrs ago).

I have a very bad tendency to listen to a cd or two for a very long time, for example, when I got Chevelle's first cd(with Send the Pain Below), and Ill Nino's Revolutions cd, I listened to both of those Cd's religiously for 2yrs(or more)...during HS I listened to Master of Puppets/Ride the lightning/Justice for All, constantly...its a bad habit I have, but I endure, :)

Most of the time, the music grabs me so bad, I listen to it over/over again, until something new takes over...currently I'm all about the Opeth, it was a Lounger who recommended them to me, and I cannot express just how happy I am, that they brought Opeth to my attention.

24. Oh, we have quite a few of those in common
I'm always impressed by the diversity of what you listen to. With Enya, I stick with her greatest hits collection.. but it is some album!

Yes, there are always bands I want to hear that get lost in the shuffle. Music is a hobby, so while I discover a lot of stuff, I don't always go back to every band or artist I found along the way. Sounds like music is a hobby for you, too! :hi:

25. Yep, music is a hobby
for me, I never really looked at it that way, but I guess you are right. I forgot to throw in Alison Krauss and Union Station, they are a very talented group of musicians. Dan T. of Union Station did the Man of Constant Sorrow song(O Brother), I got the soundtrack and I delved deeper into Country(a genre I thought I'd never like), and grew a pretty decent admiration for Country(predominately older though).

I had a hard time listening to harder music while growing up, and I listened to my father/mothers cds, even in HS, or Junior High they would constantly control my cd/music selection, so when I moved out of my parents house, I could finally start listening to music, without having an overbearing parent, snap my cds/tapes in half(sigh).

A lot of people are surprised about the music I like/enjoy, most are completely shocked by the techno/dance stuff...it was a faze, but I do like it...sue me, :)

26. I know what you mean about harder music
My parents were always wary of hard rock bands when I was young - Pearl Jam included. I started out with a lot of New Kids On The Block, Tiffany, and Debbie Gibson - but it was mixed with some Beatles and Simon And Garfunkel even back then. I had a country music phase in the 90s. And now, I have evolved into my current taste, whatever description you want to use for it. I'd say I'm heavy on pop/rock, classic rock, and singer songwriter, but am open to many types.

27. The kicker for me was,
some of the music my parents pushed on me, was just as sexual/violent as the music I wanted to listen too(think on Johnny Cash's I went to Reno, killed a man just to watch him die)...and another side note, whenever my parents broke a tape/cd, I just stole more money from them, to re buy the same tape.

When I was sophomore, I got a dual cassette player, and when I'd buy a Metallica tape(or anything deemed satan's music)I would make multiple copies, so if my parents found one and broke it, I'd still have copies hidden elsewhere, with the original in my locker at school(one place they never looked).

The only tense times, was when all my copies were busted, and I had to bring the original home, to record new copies....man, I fought my parents so hard with music, I hope I don't turn out the same way :)

28. From what I've seen you post
about the current music you are into, I'd say pop/rock fits you most of the time. From the list in your OP, it seems you veer away from anything thats harder than say, Nirvana/or Garbage.

A lot of the music you listed in your OP is very lyric/melody driven, and most of its slower/laid back. I like a good portion of the music you posted in the OP, as I prefer slower melodic guitar stuff myself, its just that I got a demon seed brother who also likes to listen to heavy kick you in the nutz guitar. But if I was put up against the ropes, I'd say I would choose the slower melodic stuff over the more aggressive.

I love the holy hell out of Johnny Cash(or any musician close to him), and the slower/ballad type tunes that Metallica has, and I'd take that over my love of Slipknot, Slayer, Korn...

The current music scene, from what I've seen is rather weak, but again you have to be aware of where I'm looking from. The only music I see is on VH1, and the MTV channels, and most of the music they show is...bad, very bad(except VH1 classic which plays a lot of music I like, guess my age is showing).

I define my music taste as Heavy Metal/Easy Listening....:)

29. That sounds like a good description
The A Fine Frenzy CD, one of my very faves, is almost all beautiful ballads - with one song, "Hope For The Hopeless," more of a rock song, but not hard rock.

VH1, like radio, is probably limited in playlist. Haven't watched VH1 in a while, but if it's like radio, there's some good stuff but then there's a lot of Hillary Duff, Creed, hip/hop (one of the few genres I don't like,) and Nickelback.

Have you considered satellite radio (XM radio/Sirius?) It has much more variety.

34. If I have to pay for radio, then its not for me.
The only radio I listen to is 93.3 the Eagle, is a radio station out of NW Arkansas, its a classic rock station. I listen to them sometimes, when I forget to bring my mp3 with me while I'm driving my van....their early morning show John/Deke is okay, usually they are up to some half way decent shenanigans.

When I was out in Sacramento, I'd listen to Rob, Arnie, and Dawn's show...but I haven't listened to them since 03(since I've been away from Sactown).

I've discovered quite a few lesser known artists (others are Lucy Walsh, Au Revior Simone, The Love Willows, Kelsey And The Chaos, Whitney Steele, Oh, Alexis!, Great Northern, and Maria Mena) from sources across the web like internet radio, Myspace, iTunes, review sites (I go to discover music rather than see if they thought albums are good or bad), amazon.com recommendations, ilike.com, etc. :hi:

31. Glad to hear someone else has an OCD with music.
I do pretty much the same thing. Something new, or old, grabs me and I'll listen to it exclusively for days or weeks. Might be several songs or it might even be one(Vitamin R). I've been doing that with one band now for a few weeks.

2 or 3 weeks is about as long as I go 'til the obsession subsides and I revert to default. "2yrs(or more)", I don't know. You might be nuts.

32. At the time of my chevelle/Ill Nino kick
I was in a part of my life where I was shedding some addictions that I had, and both of those cd's spoke to me on a very deep level, and every time I felt the urge to revert back to "old petersond" tendencies I'd listen to that music to get my mind back on track....so I guess, at the time I was nutz, because I knew I was...but I'm better now :silly: I think... at least the voices in my head say so.

12. Here's my answers...
Edited on Fri May-29-09 12:38 AM by Rhythm
1. Who are your favorite music artists?
I like a lot of varied styles/genres, but vastly prefer goth, industrial, metal, and punk. My list of 'favorites' would be too long and tedious, so i'll just say that it is topped with Danzig, White Zombie, Nine INch Nails, Bauhaus, The Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, Joy Division, Black Flag, and The Dead Kennedys.

2. Who are your favorite authors?
Modern authors? Molly Ivans, Thomas Frank, John Grisham, Clive Barker, Neil Gaiman...
CLassics? I tend toward the Romantic era poets and novelists.

3. What are your favorite movies?
To Kill a Mockingbird, The Crow, Control, Labyrinth, V For Vendetta, Aliens, Pumpkinhead

4. What are your favorite TV shows?
The West Wing, The Father Cadfael Mysteries, Jeopardy

5. What are your favorite radio shows?
The Thistle & Shamrock (Fiona Ritchie can just talk in my ear anytime)

6. What is your favorite form of entertainment/least favorite form?
Fvorite form of entertainment? Either live-performance theatre or minor-league sporting events. Least favorite is network television.

7. What brand(s) of computer do you own?
We have a 2-yr-old Hewlett-Packard laptop, and a 5 yr old e-Machines desktop. Both running perfectly.

8. Do you go to the theatre? (not movie theater, but shows and plays)
As often as possible... i'm a tech theatre drop-out from my first go-round in college, and an English major this time around. Seeing things i've previously only read is a supreme joy, and sometimes a real eye-opener to the text.

43. OMG, Please Forgive me for leaving out Dylan. I can't believe I forgot to
include him. He was one of the first influences I ever had, because my parents played him all the time. I take him for granted.

He's been a part of my life as far back as I can remember.

I'm kicking myself for forgetting to include Bob Dylan.

Many despise it, but I thought it was a good take on a story that could have easily gotten too schmaltzy or too action-oriented.

Cool that we both enjoy pop.. I think your taste is poppier than mine, in fact.

1. Who are your favorite music artists?

Groups/Solo Artists: The Beatles, Brian Wilson/Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Yes (from 1971-1990), Genesis (with either Steve Hackett or Peter Gabriel, preferably with both), Bill Evans, The Moody Blues (for sentimental reasons), Can, Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa's bands, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane/Starship (only when The Great Jack Casady was manning the bass guitar), Joni Mitchell in her "jazz" days, Sandy Denny, Fairport Convention, Pentangle, Weather Report (with Jaco Pastorius), Renaissance, Emmylou Harris, Duke Ellington, Steve Swallow, Carla Bley. Diana Krall, jazz keyboards player Hiromi (Uehara), Ben Webster. Emerson, Lake and Palmer (from 1970-74), Hatfield & the North, Caravan, Magazine, Roxy Music, Oscar Peterson, Gil Evans, Tony Bennett. Frank Sinatra (though he was a walking turd). Tangerine Dream, Sugar (the J/K techno girl-group), Ryuichi Sakamoto and YMO, (Daevid Allen's) Gong, Armin Van Buuren, lotsa nameless techno/trance/chill I have heard in the last couple of years.

Conductors: Bruno Walter, Otto Klemperer, Istvan Kertesz (especially in Dvorak), Carlos Kleiber, Andre Previn (in RVW's work),Barbirolli, Beecham, Boult, and an unknown conductor named Vernon (Tod) Handley), Georg Solti (who was surprisingly decent in almost every Romantic composer). von Karajan sucked awesomely after 1970.

Composers: Ludwig von Beethoven, Ralph Vaughan Williams, J.S. Bach, Sergei Rachmaninoff, P.I. Tchaikovsky, Johannes Brahms, Antonin Dvorak, Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy, bits and pieces of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (especially "Scheherazade")

2. Who are your favorite (fiction) authors?

Patrick O'Brien, R.F. Delderfield (ahh, they don't make writers like Ronnie Delderfield anymore... sigh), P.G. Wodehouse, Robert R. McCammon, Stephen King (not a great writer as such, but a bone-freezing storyteller), Robertson Davies, Dan Simmons (though he disappoints me of late, "Summer of Night" was one for the ages). Frankly, people who don't read books are too dumb to be allowed to live or post. I am serious.

3. What are your favorite movies?

Mulholland Drive, Yojimbo, The Story of Kaspar Hauser, or Every Man for Himself and God Against All, The original "The Mummy" directed by Karl Laemmle with Boris Karloff, all early Marx Brothers and Laurel & Hardy, The Abominable Dr. Phibes and Dr. Phibes Rises Again, Godfather I and II, Taxi Driver, The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal (even despite what it could have been if it had followed the fucking book!), Kelly's Heroes, all Monty Python films, Animal House

4. What are your favorite TV shows?

Twin Peaks, Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Prisoner, STNG, Countdown, Mythbusters, Metalocalypse and ATHF. From the old days, MTM, the ORIGINAL Bob Newhart show

5. What are your favorite radio shows?

Prairie Home Companion by miles. After that, this is hard. Probably Thom Hartmann, closely followed by Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, Stephanie Miller and Ed Schultz. Ron Reagan and Mike Malloy also nip in at the last moment.

6. What is your favorite form of entertainment/least favorite form?

The printed page remains unsurpassed by all but the best films.

7. What brand(s) of computer do you own?

MAC!!!!!

8. Do you go to the theatre (not movie theater, but shows and plays)

Not nearly often enough, but (1) I am unemployed and broke; and (2) have no one to go with. :(

9. What is your favorite sport to watch, if any?

American Football, closely followed by baseball. I also like playoff basketball. Hockey, like opera, is only interesting if seen live. Then, it is great.

10. How many hours of leisure/entertainment do you normally have in a day?

Way too many. I have been unemployed for 3 1/2 years.

Sincere apologies to all I have inadvertently omitted in the state of intoxication I now find myself after selling plasma to buy booze.
