Nestle recalls Toll House cookie dough products |
|
FYI... "Food maker Nestle USA on Friday voluntarily recalled its Toll House refrigerated cookie dough products after a number of illnesses were reported by those who ate the dough raw." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090619/ap_on_re_us/us_nestle_recall

1. Are you supposed to eat it raw? |
|
I've never used this stuff, but I'd be surprised if it didn't have a warning on the package about only eating it after cooking. Which isn't to say that a recall isn't required, of course (and I certainly eat raw dough when I make cookies...)

2. Eating the cookie dough is one of the pleasures of making cookies! |
|
I think they process it all so this won't happen...I'm sure they expect a certain amount of consumers will eat it raw. I'm guessing something went wrong in that process and there was a greater exposure to E Coli.

3. No argument from me - I love raw cookie dough (which is kind of a pointless thing |
|
to say - I mean, who doesn't?)
I guess I was just idly wondering about Nestles' legal predicament - if everyone knows that some cookie dough will be eaten raw, would a warning on the package be enough CYA?

I've been occasionally having nibbles of the stuff. Haven't gotten sick yet, thankfully.
Time to go toss it out.

7. I refuse to buy anything from Nestle or any company they own - not since about 87. |
|
That includes Carnation, Libby's and Contadina.
Nestle is STILL pushing their baby formula on third world nations - sending in representatives to hospitals to convince new mothers that their "formula" is superior to breast milk. Not only is that bullshit, but because of the expense the new mothers water it down to stretch it out, which causes malnutrition, and their breasts go dry. There is NO better source of baby food than a breast - period. Formula is a fine substitute when a mother can't nurse for biological reasons, but Nestle is disgusting.

I don't really buy any Nestle products either. Mostly local and organic for me.
Thanks for the info

Thank you for bringing this up! And wow baby, am I with you. I've been boycotting them (or trying to) since forever!
Those dirty SOB's and their campaign. It still raises my blood pressure something fierce.
They've bought so many companies that you really have to read the fine print on the product to see if they own it.

12. Salmonella is the bacteria that you have to worry about with eggs |
|
Edited on Fri Jun-19-09 12:43 PM by marzipanni
but I think eggs in packaged cookie dough are pasteurized, as some posters already mentioned. E Coli may have gotten into the dough by contamination from a person's unwashed hands, unless they're having the same problem with chickens that they are with beef...feeding them animal by-products instead of a mostly vegetarian diet (free range chickens do eat worms and bugs). Chicken eggs come out of the cloaca, as does chicken poop.
