FDA poised to ban sales of Nyquil

MATTHEW PERRONE
AP News

Jun 30, 2009 05:21 EST

Government experts are scheduled to vote on whether Nyquil and other combination cold medications should be pulled from the market to help curb deadly overdoses.

The Food and Drug Administration has assembled more than 35 experts for a two-day meeting to discuss and vote on ways to prevent overdose with acetaminophen — the pain-relieving, fever-reducing ingredient in Tylenol and dozens of other prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Despite years of educational campaigns and other federal actions, acetaminophen remains the leading cause of liver failure in the U.S., sending 56,000 people to the emergency room annually, according to the FDA. There are about 200 acetaminophen-related deaths each year.

"It can happen to anybody, but it's very rare," said Dr. Lee Simon, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School, who attended Monday's meeting. "Obviously it's important that we improve the communication about these products because they are ubiquitous, and we still see people inadvertently overdosing."

The drugs that could be pulled off shelves are combination medications, such as Procter & Gamble's NyQuil or Novartis' Theraflu, which mix acetaminophen with other ingredients that treat cough and runny nose.

1. why not just sell the shit without
acetaminophen?

good question... they put that in there to keep hop heads from drinking the shit... if you drink enough of it with Tylenol in it, you get sick and throw it up

now they are worried people are taking too much tylenol.

make up your minds, guys.

24. Unisom, the sleep aid,
contains Doxylamine succinate which is the same antihistamine found in NyQuil. This is the stuff that drys you up and makes you tired. I take the generic of Unisom instead of NyQuil now and get the same results. I have no need for the other drugs in NyQuil, acetaminophen, pseudo ephedrine, and dextromethorphan.

11. I suspect that if the FDA bans these combo meds cuz of acetominophen, the makers will reformulate.
Those products are far too popular to let them disappear from the marketplace.

12. Honestly - put Advil or Aleve in it
I actually rarely take Tylenol unless it's in a combo med like Alka Selzer or Nyquil

5. I did that when they first pulled Alka Seltzer from the shelves
because of the PPA that was in it (supposively people overdid that stuff because it would help with weight loss). It was like my own spongeworthy moments were to be had with Alka-Seltzer (Should I take it, am I sick enough that I should use this to get better).

7. How about instead of banning stuff that works when used properly, we just let the stupid people die?
That's my solution to this completely trivial non-problem.

Cool. I'd be able to get Sudafed again without having to sign for it or worry about monthly limits.

17. Okay...just so we have this straight...
Prescription meds kill HOW many people a year?

And how many people die from lack of health care?

And now they're going to ban Nyquil because a few people a year OD on it?

Oh, fuck it. I give up.

More than Nyquil, certainly.

How will you decide if your cold is NyQuil worthy?
