7. last week in august? where and with whom will you be.? i would do a beach day or weekend
and try to hit up some outdoor free shows and oh wow- there is just so much to do here. For you I would rec the Tenement Museum and the Museum of Broadcasting - next to the museum of modern art which is always super awesome. But don't waste a minute trying to figure out "getting around" - it will just happen. and NY Duers are a great bunch, not like those Massholes.
As a NYC lifer, I welcome you aboard, give me a holler if you need anything, okay?

9. i meant exploring the area close to where i will be living
by learning to get around. would be helpful to know a bit about the area before classes start though i will have another extra week to work on that.

i'll be staying in a family friend's place that is around midtown and with my family, though i'm likely to head out solo a bit and try to meet up with some future classmates that will also be in the city early.

a beach day? hmm.. i'm coming from the south where the beach is something that we head to a lot so that isn't really a big deal for me. i would like to see more of central park.. i've been to the city several times but have yet to actually enter the park.. i've only walked around it haha

15. not sure where your dorm is but most are sort of on enough of a grid, so to speak...
that the getting around part is easily learned once you get there, instead of figured out in advance. i;d just not waste a moment thinking of it until the first day of school, ha ha.

central park is great- def one of the places you should look to for the outdoor concerts...also the shakespeare in the park is a great reason to picnic. and the uptown museums, the Met, the Mus of the city of NY and Cooper Hewitt all border a nice area of the park and cane done as a loop. aside from that, i was saying beach - I say Coney Island (or water taxi beach!) because I love this place, but august can be a smelly swamp of a month, sweetie. sometimes it just stinks and it's really nice to get away from it, and that option stops abruptly on labor day.

so anyway..... the cloisters, so street seaport, the lower east side / old little italy hipster areas for shopping n eating, brookyn heights (via the bridge) maybe govenors island..

anyway there are tons of great fun cheap and fee happenings all over the city- literary, bands and dances- art - so you sould pick up a free copy of the village voice and heck out their daily guide, always good stuff there! Time out NY is also okay, but really the voice is a fab resource. im very happy for you!

17. most of my classes will be at the tisch building
and everything else will be in one of the building overlooking washington square. all very close to each other... i've walked the area a lot during trips to try to get to know it some. my dorm isn't much farther.. and within very easy walking distance of union square. we hopped onto the subway and saw some of chinatown and little italy too. i can't wait to do more exploring!

11. You should check out the High Line
I went there a couple weekends ago, and it's pretty amazing.

The city took a long-abandoned elevated train track that ran up the west side of Manhattan and converted it into one of the coolest parks/public spaces I've ever seen. Some of the views are spectacular and incredibly unique. The track runs through the middle of several buildings. It's a bit of a marvel.

http://www.thehighline.org/

Also, one of my favorite warm weather pastimes is to wander around the streets surrounding Washington Square after I get off of work. There are usually several street vendors selling used books scattered around the area. I've had some interesting conversations and purchased a whole lot of good, cheap books.

110. I have a funny story about the Staten Island Ferry and my first serious date with
my wife.

We were not lovers then - just very good friends - and what was to come between us was still unspoken, but we agreed to spend a formal evening together in the city, a fabulous restaurant with a view of the skyline, broadway, all of that.

For convenience we decided to leave our car on Staten Island where her mother lived and take the ferry.

I still remember how she looked that evening, the Statue of Liberty behind her, lit up with colored flood lights, her hair falling thick as the bay air itself, the Trade Towers then unremarkably holding up the sky.

I loved her very much already, but, as I say, I had not brought myself to tell her as much out loud, but while her silouette cut the view I thought to myself that I had never seen something quite so beautiful before as her face as she sat next to me on the Staten Island ferry.

Later, after we had been married, I recalled that evening once, how beautiful the ferry was and how much of a thrill it had been to be with her on the ferry, how romantic it all seemed.

"What?" she whined. "The Staten Island Ferry?"

She grew up on Staten Island. For her, the thing may as well have been a bus. Being on it meant, "Oh shit, another day at work."

There was not a shred of romance in that ferry as far as she was concerned.

It all involves what you are used to.

16. one of my favorite places in NYC is the Morgan Library...
I lived 2 blocks away (I lived in Murray Hill off 3rd Ave) ... would walk over there whenever I could. I'm a freak about illuminated manuscripts, though, so it figures I'd like it there.

Nice cafe/atrium, too.

Just a good place to visit, either your first week before classes or sometime later.

29. First thing...
Get a Sabrette with some onion sauce... man I miss those sooooo much.

Next up Pizza. I suggest Rudy's. Take the GW bridge over to Jersey, hop onto 9W north for about 20 minutes till you get to Old Closter Dock RD (sign says Closter), follow it down the hill to Piermont RD and make a right, then your second left onto Main ST. On your right will be a good sized strip mall and it is in there. You won't be sorry!

Back in the city, check out the Planetarium, they do awesome laser shows.

Be sure to check out the village.

Always keep an eye out for free shows in the park, I got to see a number of them (including Simon and Garfunkel).

Don't look up. It marks you as a tourist and the scam artists will pounce. Looking up is ok, I just mean try not to walk down the street with your mouth open staring up as you go... it sounds silly but you can easily find yourself doing it if it is your first time in the city.

Visit Lamont. It is a state park on the Jersey side of the river, just across the border into NY state. It runs along the top of the Palisades and is simply beautiful, you can see the Womens Castle as well as go down the Thousand Stairs (not really a thousand, it is just the name... long story) to the bottom of the Palisades. A must do.

Go to Bear Mountain in the winter. They do ski jumping and it is great to sit in the lodge and watch with a nice cup of something hot.

Great Adventure. A Six Flags park, exit 7A off the NJ turnpike (get used to knowing exits, everyone uses them for directions).

Wildwood in the summer. PARTY ON THE BEACH!

ummm... I'm sure there is plenty more... If I think of it, I'll post again. Have fun!

43. Good move
Well then the South Street Sea Port is nice

The Chrysler building for the view

The Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitian Museum of Art are good.

The Statue of Liberty and the Circle line are good touristy things

China Town and SoHo are worth seeing

Visit Times Square

A Broadway or Off Broadway show is worth it

See the Brooklyn Bridge (one of my favorites)

There is just so much to do, it really depends on your interests.

51. Other Park tidbits:
There is a pond right at the southeast corner (near 5th and 59th; you mentioned your friends were near Midtown) which serves as a bird sanctuary. For some reason the throngs of summertime park-goers seem to swirl around it but miss it.

A real outing would be to the entrance at CPW and 103rd, right opposite a station on the B and C lines. Follow the path down to another wooded stream with an even bigger waterfall!

53. Favorite day in NYC
Forbidden Planet for comics
Toy Tokyo for some cool toys
Next door to Toy Tokyo is a great frites shop
Head over for a Papaya dog
Then Alternative Music for some tunes
Get pizza from any number of good places
Last stop is The Strand book store
Lots of walking but if I'm by myself this is what I would do.

Damn I bought comics from that store 25 years ago. Really surprised to hear they are still in business.

80. Yes, ma'am - Brooklyn Academy of Music. The Next Wave Festival is one thing
that I miss the most. Always takes place in September to December, a wonderful selection of new operas, plays, musical events, and dance - I saw some amazing stuff there over the years. Robert Wilson, Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, Mark Morris, Steve Reich, Chandralekha, Pina Bausch, and so much more.

77. One of the things I miss most about NYC is a Sabrett hot dog
right off the cart. I liked mine with mustard and onion sauce. Since you're not into that, I cannot offer any new advice.

Gosh, they were tasty! I want one now, but they're hard to get in Arkansas.

Enjoy the city. I did.

88. Check out Big Apple Greeters--a group of volunteers who will plan a tour of the
city with you, whatever your interests.
http://www.bigapplegreeter.org/01-big_apple/00-what_is.html

I was going to mention the many, many museums, but you might want to wait until you have your student ID--there are discounts for students.

One of the great things about NYC is that while living there, you'll discover so much on your own.

I'd think concentrating on the basic neighborhoods (Chinatown, Greenwich Village, Upper West Side, etc.) would be a good way to suss out the subway and bus systems, and become familiar with them before school starts.

103. Ok here is my sound advice to any person starting college for the first time:
First advice: Lord loves a workin' man; don't trust whitey; see a doctor and get rid of it.

Second advice: Well, here's all you need to know. Classes: nothing before eleven. Beer: it's your best friend, you drink a lot. Women? You're a freshman, so it's pretty much out of the question. Will you have a car? Someone on your floor will. Find them and make friends with them on the first day.

113. Learn a LOT about how to get around
My two daughters were born and raised here in Germany. When they finally
went off to school "abroad," they ended up one in Hawaii, in in L.A. The
one in Hawaii graduated and went to college in Washington, DC, and the one
in L.A. changes schools and ended up in Manhattan. The one in Washington
ended up in Law School in White Plains, about a 40 minute commuter train
ride from her sister, who lives about a ten minute walk from Grand Central
Terminal.

They have both been in New York for two years now, and (for now, at least)
don't want to live anywhere else. Not here in Germany, not Hawaii, not L.A.
They're in a New York state of mind for now, anyway. I'll bet you love it.
