"Firefly" is a pretty damn good show
too bad it was canceled. I stayed up way too late last night watching several episodes of the show through hulu.com after watching a few over the weekend. The cast is all good in their roles and Nathan Fillion is very good in his role as Mal Reynolds. Some familiar faces in guest roles on there - saw Larry Drake (of LA Law) in a guest role in one; and the very busty Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) had a great role in at least 2 episodes as well.

1. Do yourself a favor and buy the dvd series.
It's just one boxed set, and you'll watch it over and over again.

2. I haven't watched any of them yet, but I certainly plan on doing so
I watched Serenity about three months ago, and I was hooked. I looked up Serenity on imdb.com, and found out the movie was a continuation of a tv show called Firefly. So, I'll eventually watch them, I saw the dvd set not to long ago for about 25$, but I was broke at the time...

I plan on getting it eventually, btw Serenity was awesome, one of the best SciFi movies I've seen in a quite some time.

6. I think the movie
wraps up a lot of loose ends from the TV show, but I saw the movie not long after it came out of DVD, so I'm a bit fuzzy now.

7. I had no idea it was part of Firefly
I saw it in the cheapo bin, and picked it up, because it looked okay, and it had the Terminator girl in it, and I was surprised at how good it was.

The whole cast was awesome, some of the cast even did voice work for the Justice League animated series, and various DC animated works.

18. Many years back
I saw the original pilot - or part of it, but wasn't that impressed. It was confusing, but it was out of order, and not the original pilot Joss Whedon intended.

Yeah. That line and the look on Jayne's face.

"*Sigh. That went well." What a brilliant way to start a story.

Wicked shame the series was canceled.

19. Nathan Fillion
is on a show called "Castle" now on ABC. Not sure if the show was renewed or not for next year or what... just a quick look at IMDB. Morena Baccarin is playing the Jane Badler role in the remake of the "V" miniseries.

Excellent show and movie. I missed the original airing but I had several friends turn me on to this show.

You can know all the math in the ‘Verse, but take a boat in the air you don’t love, she’ll shake you off just as sure as the turning of worlds.

20. Influenced by "Blake's 7" (1978-1981, BBC1), how could I NOT like it?
:D

"Firefly" also adds in its own universe. It doesn't copy or take an existing trademark and muck up all the characters and the premise just for cheap money...

33. for my tastes
I don't like any Star Treks, didn't like either Battlestar Galactica, thought SG-1 was just ok...

I was born in 85, so i missed a lot of the early years. Can't think of any series I would say I like better

In any case, it's just my opinion, I didn't mean to imply there was an objective standard

and just move around and catch that ethereal motion classical dancers can have. Whedon said he tried to use her dance training to best effect.

31. "Also? I can kill you with my brain."
Mal: "But she does have an oddness to her. And I ain't just talking about her proficiency with firearms. Girl knows things. Things she shouldn't. Things she couldn't."

Jayne: "Wha-...are you-are you sayin' she's a witch?"

Wash: (sarcastically) "Yes, Jayne. She's a witch. She has had congress with the beast."

Jayne: "She's in Congress?"

Wash: (amazed) "How did your brain even learn human speech? I'm just so curious."

---------------------

Wash: "Start with the part where Jayne gets knocked out by a ninety-pound girl, 'cause I don't think that's ever gettin' old."

---------------------

Operative: "That girl will rain destruction down on you and your ship. She is an albatross, Captain."

Mal: "Way I remember it, albatross was a ship's good luck, 'til some idiot killed it." (to Inara) "Yes, I've read a poem, try not to faint."

---------------------

Simon: "My one regret in all of this, is never being with you."

Kaylee: "With me? You mean to say...sex?"

Simon: "I mean to say."

Kaylee: "Hell with this...I'm gonna live!"

---------------------

Mal: "Ain't all buttons and charts, little albatross. Know what the first rule of flying is? Well I s'pose you do, since you already know what I'm 'bout to say."

River: "I do. But I like to hear you say it."

Mal: "Love. Can know all the math in the 'verse but take a boat in the air that you don't love? She'll shake you off just as sure as a turn in the worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughtta fall down...tell you she's hurtin' 'fore she keens...makes her a home."

where we don't get paid but damn near get killed saving someone who doesn't deserve to be saved... <rant> <rant> <rant>

Jayne: I'm in

The whole cast was great, but Baldwin constantly came up with bits of business and stuff that really brought it all together.

(And you thought "I'll be in my bunk" was in the script?)

42. I laughed at the "I'll be in my bunk" line so hard
because I'd seen it a ton of times here on DU and never knew where it was from, though the implication is clear. He (Baldwin) has a ton of good lines.

Just watched the Heart of Gold episode last night - it was amazing how quickly he said, "I'm in" as soon as Mal said they were whores.

44. The commentaries on the DVD's I got from...
Netflix had Whedon talking about the casting, amongst many other things. Seems like a lot of Baldwin's lines were ad-libbed, and Whedon loved him for it.

The other one nobody mentions much is Jewel Staite. Her surprise takes always lightened up the scene, and there was just something so fresh and honest about how she played her character. Given a choice between Inara and Kaylee, I think I'd end up with Kaylee.

they cast her perfectly. And, interesting tidbit from the DVD, apparently Joss asked her to gain 15-20 pounds before they shot. He wanted her to look more like someone who was, you know, a mechanic.
