Have you ever watched the wheels turning in your cat's (pet's) brain?
Ever since I've had Esther, I've kept her bag of dry food on a table outside the kitchen. But even though there's a chair and a couch next to said table, Esther never made it up and onto the table. Then a couple days ago I was playing with her near the table and couch. Suddenly she walked over to the couch, her eyes got real wide and she started sniffing like crazy. She sat there, looking around and behind her, eyes wide, sniffing hard, lol. Then she sat up and rested her arms on the couch.

You should know this is a couch I've NEVER seen her on. She usually ignores it and if I put her on it, she immediately jumps off. I think it's because I keep her carrier on a shelf behind the couch and she HATES the carrier, lol.

After looking up at the couch, she sits back down. Then she stands up fully on her hind legs with her front paws on the couch. At this point I think she's finally going to voluntarily sit on the couch. This whole time she's still got her eyes wide and she's sniffing frantically. Finally she does jump up on the couch, but instead of just resting, she gets up on the couch arm. What do you know, she gets into jump position and jumps onto the table. :wow:

Now I can no longer keep her food on the table, lol. Don't ever let ANYONE tell you cats aren't smart and don't figure things out. It truly is a sight to behold, their wheels turning, lol.

1. LOL - my cats are evil geniuses. I see this alot
In fact, I now know when to come running because I can see them eying trouble. Usaually that involves getting a paper product out of their sight and mind...but I've seen them TRY and nearly succeed to open that cabinet door where they know the fun TP is kept..:eyes:
They also know where the TP I use in the bathroom is..underneath a kleenex cover and occasionally will try to knock that over...Fuzzy little bastards...

2. I had a Jack Russell Terrier named Mutley....
And she was so bright, that if you didn't want her to figure out how to do something, you couldn't actually do that thing in front of her yourself.

I swear that if she'd had thumbs, she'd have ruled the world.

3. heh, see that's the thing, Esther saw me get the food everyday
she KNEW where the food was but didn't know how to get up there to it. That made watching her figure it out that much cooler.

4. I leave a full bowl of dry cat food for my cats. I'm talking a huge bowl. When it gets low my cat
Edited on Fri Jul-10-09 04:06 PM by applegrove
will start to complain and try and maneuverer me into the kitchen and near the bowl. Even if there are two more full meals left in the bowl he wants it refilled to the top asap.

8. I had a kitten figure out how to get to the big cat's food
she kept nosing him out of his dish (it was pretty funny--3 month old kitten v. 2 year old male cat), so I put his dish up on the kitchen counter because she couldn't jump that high. Weeellllll, since the counter served as the divider between the living room & the kitchen, it was open on the living room side. I had 2 book cases there. The kitten couldn't even jump up to the smaller book case, but one day, I heard this weird noise & SAW her climbing the book bindings (I had been finding books from this case on the floor for days)!!!!! Curious, I watched her. She climbed up the book bindings to the top of the smaller bookcase. This made it easier for her to jump on top of the slightly taller book case, then hippity-hop down onto the counter & into the other cat's food.

So I switched their bowls & to her dying day last year, she refused to eat or drink water on the floor.

Can't tell me cats can't problem solve.

9. I have one dog where you can actually watch the progression
of her thought processes and two dogs who remain completely inscrutable until the dastardly deed is complete. Then they go into 'damage control' indicated by the innocent "Who me?" look, the wagging tail and the puppy dog eyes. All while standing in the middle of the mess they made.
