I have decided that next year when I turn 21 I am going to have one glass of whine.
I will be able to drink next year, and while I do not plan to do it that much I think that I will try a glass of wine. My mom told me that I should have something called Arbor Mist because it is easier on first timers. I am a tad worried that I will get drunk(can you get drunk from one glass?).

1. ugh...
if you are going to have something....have something of quality so that it...um....does not taste like bathtub swill.
Good quality does not necessarily mean high alcohol content...and vice versa.
I would think that a glass of quality wine would be better for you than crap. Sometimes bad quality can make you sick in of itself.

and you don't have to have one glass. You can have half a glass or just a few sips.

or even none at all.

4. one glass? lol!
very unlikely. only if your tolerance is pretty much zero. you can get a bit of a buzz. if i drink too much wine it gives me a migraine. interestingly, red wine is also supposed to be a migraine preventative. go figure.

my suggestion would be go for the beer. the alcohol content is lower so you can drink more and there's no charred barrel taste.

5. Alright, CCharles. It is time for me to step up.
SINCE we live basically in the same town, and I actually know my wines as well as my liquors, will you do me the honor of letting me help you choose your first glass of wine - or at least your second??

Fuck Arbor Mist. If you're going to drink, let's get your palate the nicest thing we can.

I think you could have a nice Riesling and like it.

Seriously, let me know and we'll meet at a wine bar.

6. I could save you that agony in October....
get yer passport and a plane ticket and I'll take you on a pub crawl in England. 18's the legal age there...

As for the Arbor Mist... well... it's cheap plonk and IMO it's not that good (but not that bad) plonk. It's also designed to taste less like wine and more like a fruit drink - well because it has a fruit drink in it. Yes it has a lower alcohol content... all that means is that you can drink more before the alcohol affects you.

IMO there's nothing wrong with getting drunk once in your life. It is of course your choice. It is highly possible that you can feel quite light headed on one glass of wine. Drunk and disorderly, highly unlikely (possible, but unlikely). When you do get drunk, do it with plenty of friends, in a controlled atmosphere where you have no responsibilities for the next 24 hours and don't drink too much (15 vodkas is a definite no-no)! And of course definitely don't drive but you didn't need me telling you that.

If you are determined to just make it that *one* glass because "it's legal" and you don't want to get drunk that's cool but please try something that you think YOU might like.

I have an idea though: how about taking a road trip to Shelton Vineyards - they're up in the Yadkin Valley, they have a nice range of wines, and go there for a wine tasting. I think they even give you a souvenier glass. This way you can figure out what kind of wine you might like. They're open all year around and do daily tours and tastings, so it might be a nice day out. Plus they have or had a cheese shop nearby too. Wine and cheese together, my wife's idea of heaven!

I have a low level of tolerance to alcohol so it doesn't take a lot for me to get eneberated. Incidentally I don't drink alcohol these days at all for lots of reasons, but religion isn't one of them.

7. Charles, Charles, Charles.....
Please.

Do this right.

Chug as much Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill as you can. It is the BEST wine.

Then, to make it memorable, you MUST do one of the following:

1) Throw up in the heat vent that is next to the toilet.

2) Throw up on a policeman's shoes.

If you ever need advice on this stuff, come to me first.

8. When you're ready to try alcohol,
Edited on Fri Jul-10-09 10:37 PM by Tangerine LaBamba
why not start with champagne? It's tasty, it's bubbly, it's fun, and, given that you'll be having that Big Birthday, it's celebratory.

Just don't drink the cheap stuff. Arbor Mist is not for you. If you're going to try wines, try good wines. Even if it's just a glass, and if you don't like it, you can always mix it with water - that's what we got as kids growing up Italian-American in the US - or put some ice in it, or even mix it with ginger ale.

It's entirely possible you won't like the taste of anything, and that's just fine, too.

The important thing is that you try it with an open mind, and try more than one wine. There are so many, and you just might find one you like, which is a very nice thing, finding something that tastes good.

And getting drunk is not a big deal. It's sort of a rite of passage here in the United States, and if you're with friends, you'll just have fun, maybe feel a little sick, and, the next day, find out what a hangover feels like.

A warning, though - drinking cheap crap will make you sick, without fail, and it will leave you with the most horrendous hangover imaginable. Good stuff doesn't work that way, provided you keep the quantities within reason.

I think it's yummy that you're planning this ................................

Edited on Fri Jul-10-09 10:37 PM by LostInAnomie
Don't start with wine. It tastes like tangy, yeast crap. Go with something you are familiar with in taste. Start with a weak Jameson & Coke. It doesn't taste much different from a Coke, and won't leave you with the nasty after taste that wine has.

Plus, if you are new to alcohol, it should do for the night.

Who takes a lovely Irish whiskey like Jameson's and mixes it with Coke?

That's a travesty. If you want a Coke, have a coke, but to corrupt the lovely, smoky taste of Jameson's with Coca-Cola is just unthinkable.

You really rocked me with this one. My Irish pals would be in an uproar over it. I'm not gonna tell them..........................

Beer & wine are acquired tastes. Whiskeys are delicate. Tequilas are well, probably not for beginners either. But rum mixes with damn near anything.

Nothing wrong with a piña colada. There's a song for that one too, but I think I will spare the board that one. :)

Arbor Mist is soda pop. :puke:

Try a light white - Riesling or Gewurztraminer. If it's too strong, don't be afraid of putting an ice cube in the glass.

31. If you're going to try alcohol, you might as well try them all
Just remember, everything in moderation (including moderation).

Can you get drunk on one drink (assuming standard sizes)?

Not from a legal sense, but you probably will start to feel the effects even after one drink. Just remember you can have a lot more fun from one or two drinks than you can from getting actually drunk, which usually leads to gross stupidity followed by a hangover.

You only turn 21 once, so you might as well buy a bottle of champagne and share it with family or friends. The big box stores like Sams and Costcos have some nice ones in the $25-30 range, and you can probably borrow some champagne flutes from someone if you don't have any. One bottle serves about 5 people @ one glass each.

Hi Charles,
I would agree with most of the other posters on this one. If you are going to drink, get something of good quality, the after effects will be less depending on amount consumed and it will just plain taste better. Good luck on this venture.

Edited on Sat Jul-11-09 12:37 AM by Kali
a nice sparkling wine from the US is Domaine Ste. Michelle, quite drinkable and very reasonable - around $10/bottle. Or a Spanish cava - Freixenet Cordon Negro in the cool black bottle.

OR go the silly party route and drink some rum. Mai Tai's are tasty and dangerous. Pina Coladas are the same. These are sweet and go down easy so it can be real easy to drink too much, too fast and then all that sugar will really contribute to the hangover next day.

god, I'm slurring just writing about it
