1. I think all the agita it's generated is just hilarious.
It's been one of the most amusing developments here at DU.

2. It's probably difficult on people who have a low self-esteem
Myself included.

It's somewhat reminiscence of being graded by my peers in upper level seminars. Only not quite that tough!

17. I agree with this
The hysterical hyperbole over this has literally made me laugh out loud more than a few times the past few days, and I needed it.

DU is not World Of Warcraft or any other RPG; it's just an internet messageboard.

3. Someone suggested eliminating the less than zero
which makes sense. The idea with the unrec was to prevent a group of DUers from pushing polarizing posts to the greatest page. That could be done with out having the less than zero count, which seems to be a way for some to torment other DUers. Although personally I don't care one way or the other, but it does seem to hurt the feelings of others. For that reason alone, it would seem best to allow unrecs to only cancel out recs, not create a negative review.

5. That was it ("to prevent a group of DUers from pushing polarizing posts to the greatest page")?
I never saw a thread by the Admins explaining it.

7. Thank you, Ptah
I pretty much stick with the Lounge, LBN, and motorcycle group when I'm at DU. :hi:

10. Ptah...
Now that I think about it. If the reason is supposedly "to prevent a group of DUers from pushing polarizing posts to the greatest page" why is it even used in the Lounge?

None of the threads in the Lounge have the ability to make it to the greatest page.

hmm.

4. I would also suggest that the unrecs could help reduce some of the fighting
where before a person may have felt the need to post a snarky comment or a neo-call out thread over a view that strongly disagreed with but was highly recced, they can now get a bit of satisfaction by voting the other way.

Edited on Sat Jul-11-09 01:52 PM by Kali
I paid a little attention to it at first but I'm back to rarely noticing the status again. Even before I rarely rec'd much of anything, so doubt I would use it much this way either.

I mostly go by subject line. If it catches my eye, I open and read.

9. I wonder if you'd feel that way if you had a "following" doing "unrec" to all your threads
Edited on Sat Jul-11-09 01:55 PM by Haole Girl
:-(

Maybe it will be the added "nudge out the door" I need.

Maybe it was Skinner's way of letting those who are unwelcomed become fully aware of it.

I think you're too sensitive and are reading into things to fit your hurt sensibilities.

19. Well, I'm not trying to drive you away...
...but if you're to the point where you think Skinner did this to get rid of sensitive people than maybe the site really isn't for you. I'm not trying to be mean here. You and I have no issues with one another, but I think the accusation against Skinner is pretty far fetched. Maybe you should just take a week away from here and see how things play out with the new feature.

13. You have to consider the possibility
there are just a few anti-social types that are simply getting their jollies upsetting people like yourself. As you pointed out the recs are meaningless. So why let them bother you?

20. I agree.
I don't really see the point of the feature in the Lounge, but no one should let it hurt their feelings.

No doubt some are just doing it to get under others' skin.

I've been unreccing all the threads in GD complaining about the feature, because I'm tired of them. But I did not unrec yours.:hi:

This is the Lounge; I can't see the point of it here.
