"The Seventh Seal" and "La Dolce Vita" made for one wild-assed double feature last night...
...I've got to get more of these Criterion black & white films from Netflix. It's been a while since I've seen Jean Cocteau's "Beauty and the Beast"...that's next, I think. I need more Bergman, more Fellini...and since these DVDs sell for 30, 40 bucks and up, Netflix is the way to go.

OK, list your favorite Criterion black & white masterpieces here...

1. Quite a few:
"8 1/2," "The Bicycle Thief," "Seven Samurai," "Ikiru," "La Dolce Vita," "The 400 Blows," "M," "Nights of Cabiria," "Early Summer" and "Late Spring."

I'm probably missing a few, but those are some of my favorite Criterion B&Ws.

2. I've seen "Seven Samurai" on Turner Classic Movies, a few years ago...
...so that will probably also go on my list.

6. There's two Criterion versions of that movie.
The newer, 3-disc edition is far better in terms of image quality, sound, etc.

In fact, check out www.dvdbeaver.com if you haven't.

Here's their "Seven Samaurai" comparison:

10. Netflix is occasionally behind the curve on those releases...
...my interest in "Seventh Seal" came about after reading a review of the new 2-DVD set. Netflix has the last criterion release, but "La Dolce Vita" is the newest one...you can order DVD 2's "bonus material" separately.

I will wait until they have the 3-DVD version of "Samurai" before requesting. Thanks!

5. Agreed.
I knew people who had raved about it for years (as well as other movies like Aguirre: The Wrath of God), so I was surprised both movies definitely lived up to all of the hype.

8. Holy crap, what are you waiting for?
:P

Have you seen other Herzog movies? I think "Aguirre" and "Fitzcarraldo" are his best.

11. That's the only one I can't find on Netflix.
I'm sure Blockbuster has it available, but I'm too lazy to get a membership.

Oh, also check out "Stroszek" and "The Enigma of Kasper Hauser."

14. Thanks for the heads up on the new Marienbad.
Have you seen it? Any extras or anything? I already have a version, but it's kind of noisy: hiss, surface noise, pops etc.

Off to investigate....

:hi:

21. The local Tower Records...before it became a pet food store... had a great Criterion selection.
Rasputin Music, which is literally 1/2 a block away from where Tower once stood in Campbell, HAS a Criterion section, but I don't think their heart's in it. It was pretty well maintained a while back but seems to be shrinking.

You pick them up and one after another, they're fascinating and diverse and amazing.

This year's birthday was an odd one. The Seventh Seal / La Dolce Vita combo might as well serve as an ink blot snapshot of the festivities.
