What is a normal amount of sleep in a day?
How much do you sleep? How much should a person sleep? Is there such a thing as too much sleep? an unhealthy amount?

1. I think it depends on the person.
Me, I need 8 hours, but can get by with 7. 6 at a pinch, but I hate that.

7. Thats about right
Except when something prevents it, I am good for between 7-8 a night. I generally wake up after 8.

Though sometimes I have insomnia, and I end up living on 4-5 a night for a week or so. Doable, but not at all enjoyable.

2. Did you know...
Too much sleep is as dangerous as too little?

3. I've read that before.
I know if I get too much (not likely to happen in a household with as many animals as mine) that I feel awful.

I seem to have my own clock anyhow. Don't even use an alarm.

6. I feel awful if I sleep too much, too...
much, much worse than being sleep deprived. And it's wasteful!

10. I dont know about worse
but more immediate. For myself, one instance of oversleeping has a similar effect to several cumulative days of being sleep deprived. One day of deprivation doesn't have much effect, but when they start stacking it can get uglier.

8. But does that account for
napping once one has left the confines of the sleeping area?

9. I usually get between 5 and 6 hours of broken sleep.
I'm such a light sleeper. I hear everything. I awaken many times through the night.

I get up at 4:30am. I go to bed between 10:30 and 11:30pm.

11. Sorry
I know that feeling. Ive tried everything I can think of, but my default setting seems to be to wake a lot at night. Every fix helps for a while, but then the effect fades. black out curtains, fancy new bed, white noise, temp control, etc. The new bed helped for almost a month before I reset and started waking up a lot again.

I couldn't go to bed so early. I've tried. Except in cases of extreme illness, I haven't been to bed before midnight in about 18 years.

12. I think I am just the sort of person that doesn't need
a lot of sleep.
