What is the first popular rock song you loved and your age?
For me, I suppose I was 6-ish and it was America's "Horse with No Name"

6. Rock Around The Clock
Edited on Sun Jul-12-09 03:39 PM by MineralMan
I first heard it when I was 10 years old, being covered by a band at a roadhouse in Merced, CA, near where my family was camping. I'm 64. I think I was 10 or 11 years old.

"What's that music?" I wondered. "I like it."

1955 or 1956, I guess. It's still Rock N Roll to me.

I don't know who the band was, but it was probably a cover of the Bill Haley version. However, given the times, it could have been Bill Haley and Comets at that roadhouse. I couldn't see the band.

But I was about 14 or 15 when it was popular.

I also freaked out over Chuck Berry, any of it , but School Days, Rock and Roll Music and Maybellene I liked best.
I also remember Gene Vincent songs on radio.
I will be 62 next month, but I loved to listen to music early, so I was probably about 5 or 6.

I seem to be old now.

an older friend who was in junior high in LA when the Beatles hit told me once about hearing them for the first time and how they were so different from everyone else...that memory and his beautiful telling of it started to slowly melt away my glacial hatred of the Beatles...i now get it

8. Don't know if was the first rock song that I "loved"...
...but the first record I ever bought was the 45 of "Surfin Bird" by The Trashmen, 1963, so I was the advanced age of 8. I think the B side was a song called "The Birdman of Alcatrash."

13. Jumpin' Gene Simmons - Haunted House
Edited on Sun Jul-12-09 04:17 PM by merh
I would have been about 4 - I remember singing it all the time.
Also Chubby Checker's Twist (which had been released in 1960), guess I had siblings that loved the Twist.

HAUNTED HOUSE (Robert Geddins)

I just moved in my new house today
Moving was hard but I got squared away
When bells starting rings and chains rattled loud
I knew I'd moved in a haunted house
Still I made up my mind to stay
Nothing was a-gonna drive me away
When I seen something that give me the creeps
Had one big eye and two big feet
I stood right there and I did the freeze
It did the stroll right up to me
Made a noise with its feet that sounded like a drum

Said "You gonna be here when the morning comes?"
"Say yes, I'll be here when the morning comes
I'll be right here, I ain't gonna run
I bought this house, now I am boss
Ain't no haint's gonna run me off"

In my kitchen my stove was a blazing hot
Coffee was a-boiling in the pot
Grease had melted in my hand (pan?)
I had a hunk of meat in my hand
From out of space there sat a man
On the hot stove with the pots and pans
"Say that's hot" I began to shout
He drank the hot coffee right from the spout
He ate the raw meat right from my hand
Drank the hot grease from the frying pan

And said to me "You better run and don't be here
When the morning comes"
Say yes I'll be here when the morning comes
I'll be right here now, I ain't gonna run

I bought this house now I am boss
Ain't no haint's gonna run me off.

22. It would have to be "I Saw Her Standing There"....
But it doesn't really reflect my age (38). My parents were NOT Beatles fans by ANY stretch- Dad is a certified opera snob and Mom was into show tunes and early folk (Kingston Trio and the like). For some reason, there was a copy of "Please Please Me" hanging around the house that my sister (5 years older than me) and I would listen to. I completely wore out the "I Saw Her Standing There" track. I still love the song- it's among my signature guitar playing warm-up exercises.

The first album I went out and bought was KISS- Dynasty. I plead temporary insanity, and thankfully it didn't last long.

Later, I got into Blondie and Talking Heads, which would be the first bands of which I considered myself a fan.

37. The first time I heard Elton John on an Oldies station, I thought,
"What's that doing on K-Earth?"

Then I realized that the song - "Daniel" - was 35 years old. THIRTY-FIVE! I guessed then that it qualified as an oldie.
